Save my artichoke!

Maybe there's nothing I can do. We've had a wicked cool spring and summer so far here in Oregon.

I'm trying my first artichoke. It's in a very large container on my front porch. It grew lots of nice grey leaves but when the outside leaves start to get huge, they're turning yellow and then whithering.

Initially, it happened during a brief warm spell and I thought they needed more water. I've kept it well-watered during warm days. But another big leaf started yellowing this week during a damp cool spell. Could it be a nutrient thing?

The plant is in a combo of store-bought general potting soil and compost from our bins. About 50/50. I have a small clay pot sunk into the big pot, filled with water, so the plant can suck a steady supply as needed (this technique's worked well for other container plants). In hot weather I also supplement with watering.
