What are cucumber beetles attracted to in your garden?

Since they are called cucumber beetles you would think they were primarily a pest of cuke plants. Not in my garden though and I am wondering about your garden.

A brief history:

For years my primary veggie garden area has grown beans and cukes in close proximity. Every year my cukes have been killed by cuke beetles and my beans have their leaves chewed up (don't care) and the beans themselves get black spots where the cuke beetles nibbled (which makes for a lousy looking jar of dilly beans).

I gave up on cukes for years as a result, but still had a cuke beetle problem with my beans.

This year I decided to do cukes again with a new plan.

I grew 4 cuke varieties in the same garden area as the beans and the same 4 varieties in self watering containers far away from the main veggie area.

The cukes in the same area as the beans ended up covered in cuke beetles even though there were more on the beans than the cukes.

The cukes well away from the main veggy area have not had a single cuke beetle on them.

What gives?

I think it is the beans.

What has your experience been?
