Wanted: Garlic, Shallots

New to the exchange but hoping I can find some good trades:

I Have:

- Bhut Jolokia Chili Pepper seeds. They are from this years harvest. Parents came from seeds purchased from Chili Institute of New Mexico. Flowers were bagged prior to opening and allowed to self pollinate until fruits formed. Then seeds were harvested from fully mature fruits.

- Yellow Watermelon (Sorbet Swirl (F1) from Johnny Seeds.

Seeds are from mature fruits grown from Johnny Seeds. I planted 6 seeds from the 1st fruit and all 6 sprouted and grew. Seeds will be from this same batch. Fruit is yellow and very tastey! Thin skinned and about the size of a volleyball - basketball.

- Saffron crocus (Crocus sativus). These are the Crocus you plant to harvest the expensive spice "Saffron." I grew them last year and have a collection of small sized Crocus which should produce a flower not this year but the next. I also have some that will probably to most likely produce a flower this year.

I would Like:

- Garlic Bulbs. Anything will do but I'm hoping to find something that has a really nice strong garlic taste.

- Shallot Bulbs. Anything. If you have something exotic I would be interested in that as well.

i have some small purple top garlic,cloves are small but should grow. this was given to me by the person who grows the garlic for himself. it is quite strong. he says to keep larger bulbs to plant so you get bigger bulbs.his are large. would like to trade for saffron crocus. thanks

I have both shallot and garlic and would be interested in any of your listed items, first choice would be the crocus. lmk.

I traded for these shallots several years ago here on GW. Am not sure if there is another name for them. They have became my favorite shallot as they are easy to grow and are very productive and grow to a bigger size than the other ones i have grew. I will contact you by email. Gary

I've had great luck with early November seed-planted shallots here. Some were the size of small onions! The set-sown shallots were not much bigger or better. Last fall I tried garlic (expensive garlic) and was disappointed...small heads and half of them rotted during curing...I'll try again though. We used the 'green garlic' (immature garlic) and scapes in sautes and fried--tastes just like garlic! Good luck, deb

Terri, Thank you for your reply and I have added your favorite garlic to my list for next year. I received an email from one of the CF members who very kindly sent me a wonderful link that I had not found in all my garlic searches. I was blown away by all the different varieties of garlic available! I have already placed my order for this year and it will be shipped this week. I look forward to having really fresh garlic for the very first time. I hope it is as juicy as the beautiful garlic that ann-t posted earlier. Jessica, I have several times planted some of the sprouted garlic and was disappointed when it just disappeared never to be seen again. I was surprised that even the stuff I tossed onto the compost never grew as I have had herb, flower and tomato plants pop up in the compost. I finally decided I needed to get a totally different kind of garlic if I wanted to grow and harvest it successfully. I posted here because I read the cooking forum on a fairly regular basis as I donÂt get to spend much time on the forums and I spend even less time on the garden side. Most of my computer time is at night and it is limited. Today I just have about 30 mins for this gardenweb visit before going to work. So the cooking forum is about the only one I visit. You will want to plant your shallots in a bed that did not have any other alliums growing the previous year. I've been growing shallots for years, and the general rule of thumb is that if you plant small shallots, at harvest they will yield a small (2-4) number of large bulbs, and if you plant large shallots, you will harvest a large (6-12) number of smaller bulbs. So, you want to plant some of each every year, so that you can keep some of the large ones to eat (and plant a few of those for small shallots at the next harvest) and plant all of your small ones, so that you have a nice harvest of large ones to eat next year. What the rule of thumb doesn't say is what happens to the MEDIUM-sized bulbs you plant. My experience is that some will act like small bulbs and grow into large ones, and some will act like large bulbs and grow into small ones. I end up eating most of my medium bulbs, so that I'm planting either smalls or larges and can know what to expect at harvest time.

I'm waiting on my order of garlic (5 lbs. coming) and would love to trade some of them (3 types) for some of your pepper seeds and a few saffron crocus.

hi my name is ric . i grow several types of garlic that came originally from seed savers ex.-samarkan persians star , georgian fire, siberian, czech. broadleaf and inchelium red . the names are fancy but they are all very similar. i think alot depends on the climate and conditions, anyway i will be planting the biggest fattest toes back in the garden very soon so if you would like to trade for some safron crocus let me know.i grow shallots too but they are the common brown dutch type that all the stores sell .they are the only ones that are reliable keepers till spring planting time. i had odetta white for several years but they finaly faded out
