Hello (New to Forum)

Hi Everyone,

I just joined the this forum. This is my second year of vegetable gardening. Some how I don't feel any smarter this time around. Last year I planted cucumbers, lettuce and carrots because I just wanted to see if I could grow things without killing them. Wouldn't you know, everything grew much to my amazement. Of course I learned about lettuce bolting the hard way (yuck!).

This year, I have gone crazy. I have what my husband and I refer to as a step garden on the south side of our house. Once I figure out how to post pictures, I'll be happy to show and tell. I also conned my husband into putting in a shade garden for my broccoli and cauliflower. Next year I'll add my peas, spinach, and lettuce there. And on my balcony deck I have a small herb garden. Last count, I put in 19 different types of vegetables, 12 herbs, and three different kinds of fruit. So far nothing has failed, fingers crossed.

With these tough economic times, and me recently losing my job, I love that I have food growing right in my back yard. There is definitely a thrill in watching all my seeds sprout into seedlings and then finally producing healthy, pesticide and herbicide, free food.

I used to work with a woman who has been gardening for years. Now that I have lost my job, I have also lost my source for good gardening tips. I am hoping by joining this forum, I can tap into other veteran gardeners' vast knowledge of gardening.

Welcome--I can't think of a better way to help out my family financially and nutritionally, and me spiritually with our garden.

Welcome to veggie gardening. =) There's a wide variety of helpfull knowledgable people on here. So, feel free to ask whatever questions you have (search the forum for the answer first, of course).

dmoore66, the grubs that are in the ground now are next years Japanese Beetles. Plus, there are scientific reports around that have found success with milky disease controlling other Scarab beetle grubs...it's just Japanese Beetle grubs seem to get the disease the easiest. I am a firm believer in milky disease. 5 years ago when I 1st renovated my front lawn with KBG, I put down a 10oz. can of milky spore. Last fall, I did a full renovation (due to Creeping Bentgrass in my KBG), front, back, and sides to 3 top-rated TTTF's. The results of milky spore are obvious, front lawn is damage-free, while back and side have patches of dead grass, which pulls up, revealing plenty of grubs. I now just put down a 40oz. can over the rest of the lawn. $30 for 10oz. at big box stores and garden centers. I bought a 40oz. can online for $68 shipped.

"Mother of Thyme" Thymus serphyllum is low and easy to grow from seed. I start my thyme 1st week of February. Grow in small pots or plug tray. Use a soiless medium and barely cover the seeds with builders sand or fine vermiculite. Water from bottom and do not over water. When you sow put in about 10-15 seeds per plug/pot so you have a nice bushy plant. They will germinate in about 8-10 days in a temperature of 65-70 degrees. It can be grown outside but make sure you sow your seed on a thick layer(2-3")of a soiles medium(Pro-Mix)or any other brand you garden center might have. You need this so your seeds are not competing with the germination of weed seeds. If this is still a problem you can wait till you temperature warms up and sow your seeds in large rectangular plastic storage containers. Punch holes in bottom for drainage. Fill container(3-4")with soiless medium and generously sow seeds. Place in a partially shaded area and mist when needed. When container is full of nice size seedlings remove small clumbs to the area you want to cover.

A search for "tomato leaf curl" and "tomato leaf roll" here at GW will get you many threads and links to review. While it can be caused by a bad infestation of aphids or whiteflies. Assuming you don't have those, then it is the normal physiological response of a stressed plant - too cool, too wet, too dry, too hot, too much fertilizer, too many fruit, etc. All those factors can cause side-to-side leaf roll. It usually does not affect production. Since yours are in a greenhouse and it is affecting more than one plant, I would first suspect temps need modification. Then review and alter your watering program - too dry is much better than too wet - and see if it improves. Good luck. :) Dave

Ugh, looks like Bahiagrass. After mowing, makes 12-18" stalks of ripe seeds within days. Awful stuff that I hate even with my "whatever's green is fine" attitude for our mowed areas. I've been pulling the giant rhizomes (that simply squash/smash the regular grass to death) out of areas where we usually walk. Nobody likes having those seeds stuck all over them from the knees down. If not for that stuff, going 3-4 weeks sometimes (when it doesn't rain) between mows would be fine for the regular grass.

Hello and welcome.

There's a lot of people expanding their gardens and putting more emphasis on raising food to ease their budgets this summer. Never hesitate to ask a question because there are probably 100 shy people out there who want to know but don't dare ask. :-)

I have learned so much about gardening over the years just by reading the forums here on GardenWeb. The members here are very helpful too.

A hearty Welcome, Veg. I was injured at work a few years ago and had to stop gardening. Finally, this year, I felt good enough to try again. Preparing was difficult, as I, like you, wanted to supplement my groceries with healthy, organic produce, and I am badly out of shape after 4 years of virtual inactivity. But, I got it done, and I think it has been good for me to work outside, and to eat good veggies and fruits.
This forum has been extremely helpful, in that, I have never had an organic concern, before. But, I have a beautiful garden, and the squash medley I had for dinner last night was exquisite.

No matter how long you've been gardening, there's still more to learn...that's the joy of it. Well, that and eating your own fresh veggies!
Don't forget to check out the individual forums, too(tomatoes,peppers,legumes,etc.), where there's additional info and friendly folks.

Thanks so much for all the warm welcomes. I have been reading my way through the posts, and am already learning something.

This morning I was able to eat two pea pods fresh from the vine. Yum! I think my squash will be ready in a few days.

I'm sorry, I'd thought I had let you know.

I got almost 100% germination of the Insuk beans I planted and I saw the first flowerbud today.

Hi and welcome! This is a great group of people and you really can learn so much from them. The older I get, the more I learn. I agree that you should check out some of the other plant specific forums as well. Also, the Harvest Forum can really help you safely keep what you reap for future eating.

Veggie,
I'm new to veg gardening forum but not new to the gardenweb. Gardeners are just down to earth (smile) and we have a great 'crop' of them.

This is my first year growing vegetables and so you probably won't read very many solutions coming from me -- for the past few years my time has been spent with citrus trees.

I'll add my welcome, too! I agree that this is a great place to learn. I'm in my mid-??'s and I still have questions! The one thing gardening isn't is boring. Every year brings different challenges, but also lots of joy. (It's fun being able to out-wit Mother Nature once in a while!!)
Posting pictures is pretty easy, but you need to use a photo-hosting site like Village Photo or Webshots or something. I've included a link to the Test Forum; if you want to ask there someone can give you detailed instructions about posting pics.
