What are these white bumps on my tomato plant?

Hi, i have 2 tomato plants that have small white bumps at the base of the plant. The plants look droopy also. What is this?

It's only 2 out of 16 plants that have these bumps on the base and they don't look so good.

Those bumps are actually places where the vine is willing to grow new roots. They are normal.

As for the plant not looking so well, are you in the area that has been cool and soggy for so long?

Is it a container plant or in the ground?

I am in Pa. and these plants have been in the ground since May 1. It has been a little wet this month buy not that bad, not that cool either. It's just strange that only 2 of the plants have these white bumps going up a few inches from the base and the other 14 do not.

I don't know if you went over to Tomatoes, but that is an excellent source of info. If you have room in your pot, you can add some more dirt to the top, and those bumps might turn into roots. You could also try a fungicide combo that Safer makes, I can't remmeber the name of it but it is available at garden supply and Home Depot type stores, and it comes in an aqua bottle in spray or concentrate formulas. It worked like a charm for me when some of my tomatoes got the yellows, and it also works OK for white flies. Also make sure you aren't over-watering, its easy to do in a pot. A good dousing once a week or so unless it looks wilty oughta do it. Help! Weird/gross elongated white bumps on witch hazel plant

Your image is too blurry for me to see anything identifiable. Are these 'bumps' attached to the leaf? If so, they are witch hazel cone (or nipple) gall. Common to this plant. If you think that this is what's going on with your plant, cut one open and see a nursery for the species of aphid that makes these galls.

Liz, I can give you my idea of what it might be as I'm sure others will but I think it's best that you go to a diagnosis site and try to match what you see there with what you have. If the small bumps on your still green fruits are black and somewhat small then along with your comment about black spots on the stem it might be Bacterial Speck or Bacterial Spot. But for both of those diseases there are usually spots on the foliage as well. Below I'll link to a diagnosis site and you can check out the fruits link and the others to ID what you have and once that's done then knowing which disease then I and others can suggest something you might want to consider to treat with if that's possible. So at this point I wouldn't pull the plants. As I recall you're on LI and the major concern would be Late Blight, which is lethal, but your description doesn't indicate that at all. Don't worry that the TAMU site I linked to below is from TX b'c each site lists ALL diseases, usually, even though many diseases are regional. I like the TAMU site b'c many of their pictures are from the Seminis/Petoseed tomato disease book and I think the pictures are some of the best around. I just went and bought a tomato plant today, has the same thing. I just planted it a bit deeper to cover those areas, they are roots, or will be=)

We may be talking about different things. The brownish nubs/bumps are roots to be.

Are you meaning those, or are you talking about the very fine white stuff that looks like someone sprinkled sugar on the plants stems, yes? I think we're all looking at the main stem, instead of the side stems where the white stuff is.

The leaves look more than wilty, they look like they are dying, with curled leaf edges. I haven't a clue as to either of these, unfortunately, just was trying to see if we were all talking about the same things.

It's kinda far up to be growing roots?

Tomato plants like all members of that family have what are called adventitious roots (you can Google that term to see photos) that can develop all along the length of the stem. That is what the small bumps are. Perfectly normal but more pronounced in some varieties and more pronounced in wet humid environments. Contact with the soil is not required but if there is soil contact they will develop into full blown roots.

There is also a flat brown scabbed injury on your stem photo and the clear crystalized sparkles are just the fine hairs normal on all surfaces of the plant.

However the leaves in the photo - they are dead and a source of stress or possible disease and need to be removed from the plant. Can't say what cased that problem - could just be plant age as plants normally die from the bottom up.
