Maple syrup

Not quite sure where to pose this question so I thought I might start here...

I actively look for interesting things to do and teach my grandkids and just for kicks I would like to make a little maple syrup...and as you will see I do mean LITTLE. I know it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup but even if I can get enough for one breakfast of pancakes I will be happy.

I have a large maple tree in my yard and a large one at my daughter's house. I would like to tap these 2 trees to collect the sap. I need to know how many taps I can place per tree and if I can make some kind of tap myself. I cannot afford to purchase them online as they are pretty expensive and since this is only for fun I cannot justify the expense right now. I figured I could use well cleaned out milk jugs to collect the sap and can teach a little recycling at the same time.

Does anyone have any experience this making syrup and can recommend any good forums or links to help me in the adventure? Kim
