Good Fruit Grower magazine, good read

This month there are good articles on fire blight, irrigation, and grow regulators to promote branching and reduce excess vigor. Any serious fruit grower should consider a subscription, $75 for three years. About 16 issues per year. Since it's out of WA it centers on that industry. But there are frequent articles about the Eastern and Midwestern US.

I've been a reader since the 70s. No affiliation or any other reason to promote other than all I've learned over the years.

Been a subscriber for years and agree. Its front covers are things of beauty as well. New Yorker and it are all I subscribe to through the mail, and NYer sub. is a continuing gift from my mother.

I've been growing since 71 and only possibly ever had fire blight one time. That tree hit the ground so fast it bounced right into the trash, well almost. Anyone with fire blight should read this issue. There are numerous new control methods and materials.

In your climate and if your soil has limited water holding capacity, irrigation might be good at least during dry spells. But in my opinion one thing wrong with store bought apples is that they tend to be over watered and over fertilized. This results in big fruit that isn't very sweet. The commercial growers get paid on fruit size and appearance, not on taste. A quick read of your link said only a 15% increase in size. Not worth it for a home grower but a big part of the profit margin for a commercial orchard.

Tony, Yeah, I had a hard time envisioning the bear-protection-program she resorted to, but it was a very funny image. We don't fit their profile either.I infer that profile of their readership by the cost of items they advertise. I don't know why I even mentioned that. Maybe I felt funny about saying "I read it in the New Yorker" the same way I sometimes feel strange about referencing the New York Times instead of USA Today. Writing on these formums is really an act of trust, isn't it? We really know o little about the people we send our thoughts out to: we don't see what kind cars each other drives, or homes, not to mention other subtle indicators of income or class. I think I was also wondering how a bee-keeping article by a staff writer of this magazine would sit with the ordinary beekeeper. So far, I have not a met a single gentleman or "gentlewoman" beekeeper. Here's another reading recommendation: a slim novel called "The Final Solution" by MIchael Chabon. The protagonist is a very old, retired sleuth, who comes out of his private isolated world- which includes beekeeping- to solve one final case. You may recognize the book title as one of the last Sherlock Holmes story titles. There's a description there of him filling his briar pipe with a particularly noxious dark smokey tobacco, and exhaling into the hive to quiet the bees. It is priceless.Lots of good bee obervations, too, as literary and symbolic devices- I thought it was just neat to see bees "talked" about in a different perspective. I feel the same way about this little thread, and other occasional ones: beekeeping as a spiritual experience. So, Tonybeeguy, thanks for continuing to check in with us new 'uns, and giving me a chance to update you on this little love affair.

Well, the library continues to grow ... I just this afternoon recieved Carla Emery's fine reference book 'The Encyclopedia of Country Living' (the updated 9th edition) and have been browsing through it between bites of dinner. Gosh, what an excellent piece of work this is! It's obvious the love she put into it during the 32 plus years that she spent compiling and writing. As an aside, a book doesn't need to be new to be useful ... mine are because I don't have a nearby source of used books of this type. So I get the new ones from Amazon.com and offset that by donating all my unused used books to the Mark Skinner Library ... so far two decent sized boxes of them. But I also have a number of very old used (obviously!) books that I found in a trunk out in the barn.

alisande -- Thank you for the link to the eulogy. It's beautiful. Yes, the absent parent... Every child's biggest fear is abandonment, and that's how a child can experience a parent's death. It's usually an unacknowledged feeling. I think the new children's grief groups (sometimes an outshoot of hospice) are a wonderful! I think that these events and feelings -- looking at them, examining them -- can make us more tender and better human beings. I was impressed with the *goodness* in Rosenblatt's story. There's such sweetness in the children's ongoing lives and the efforts made by the adults. The adults took up the burden of grief and loss without letting it completely ruin their lives or those of the children. They'll be as OK as possible, which is all we can expect. The tragedy can't be undone, but we can cope well -- or not.

fruitnut, I cannot find the article about Fireblight in the February issue? I just flipped through the digital version, so maybe it's not in the digital version but only in the print version?

It's in the Febr 15 vol 64 no 4 edition. The last one posted is no3 the Febr 1 edition. There are 17 issues per year. My guess is the no 4 will be posted in a week or two.

I just renewed for three more years.

I have been getting it for five years or so. I would say its probably best for most of us home growers to just skim the website every couple of months, the online version is only one month out of date. About 80% of the content is industry stuff I don't really care about. Well, its still interesting to read about the new automated harvesters etc, just not particularly relevant.

Also, your own landgrant university (through cooperative extension) has most info of what's available and affective in your own state for any pest control issues. Many of the products discussed in Good Fruit are not packaged for home growers and sometimes only legal in Washington State.

I subscribe to Western Fruit Grower and its free. It is also geared to commercial growers which I am, but there are still good general purpose articles in it.
