My peaches are budding... Too early!

My peach trees are starting to bud and it's Feb 2! It's been in the 50's and 60's lately and today it's 76!

I'm sure there will be a killing frost before the end of winter. I guess I'll be without peaches this year, Bummer.

Me, too. If we get a night with temps below 32, which can still happen where I am, I'm in trouble, too.

I am in Bath, Ohio so we are probably in the same zone. The shoots of my echinacea sunset are just now beginning to peek out of the soil. Ruby Star, which is in a location with all-day sun, is a little further ahead. My Peach Flambe is in a very sheltered south-facing bed is just showing its first small leaves, but they weren't there a week ago. Don't worry, they will come back ... a few more of these sunny, mid-50's days (and a little less spring snow!) and they will be up. belfastmom

Shagnasty I have also been through a rough year on fruits. All of my figs were in full leaf with young figs setting and all were lost to the Easter freeze. The older trees recovered and set nice crops. The record warm period at present is waking figs up a little. There are a few small figs showing on several varieties. If we don't get slammed with an extreme cold blast, we'll probably be ok and lose only a few of next years crop. This has been my experience for 20+ years. Jack

I understood what you meant :-) My question in response was whether or not you thought removing any flower buds would prolong their life........ I'd guess the stunting/lack of growth is due mostly to the double transplanting and that the flowers buds are just being produced as a normal pattern of growth even though the plants are still quite small and don't appear to be growing. It is not at all unusual for 4" pots of various perennials (tiny little plants) to produce flowers while still at the nursery or garden center and is not necessarily an indication that the plants are on their way out.

"So should I expect less production now?" Can't say. I doubt it would be any noticeable amount. You definitely lost any fruit those you removed may have produced but then they may not have set fruit anyway. Not all blooms do. And if a plant is too small or young to cope with fruit it often just drops the blooms or small fruit all on its own. Dave

Budding here as well. Our last damaging freeze usually occurs in April. I'd say that gives at best a 10% chance of a crop. That's why I have a greenhouse. Oh that and hail, wind, birds, coon, stink bugs, and probably a few more that have cost me crops outdoors.

Good to know, Frank. Very doubtful we'd get to 28, but still a possibility to get to 31-32 for a few hours. Sure hope not. My Desert Delight nectarine is in full on bloom. It's one of the earliest of all my stone fruits. That any my two cherry trees (Minnie Royal and Royal Lee), and the cherries are also starting to bloom. Everything is a wee bit early here.
