Celosias growing but will not bloom!
My celosia is growing well but where are the flowers?
I collected seeds from a yellow celosia plant last year and for the first time, have started my own from seed this year. After transplanting them to containers, they took off growing, BUT there hasn't been one bloom on any of the three I planted.. So... I'm reaching out to the cyber world for help..
Does anyone have any thoughts about why my celosia plants haven't blossomed yet? They are growing very well but it is only foliage, no flowers.
I started them from seed in late February and they've been in pots for over 60 days. It's now the May 31st..
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

9 years agoWell, after 5 days of no responses or follow ups, ironically my question answered itself. One of my celosia plants has started to bloom!! I'm excited now to see this.. Due to the size of my plant, I have a feeling it is going to explode with huge blossoms!!
So... Although I'm a little disappointed in what seems to be a dead "forum", I hope this question and self answered concern serves someone well one day when they too are wondering the same thing I did..
In all, I started celosias from seed, they grew very well, but they took WAY longer than the typical "days till flowering" given by most celosia seed data. My yellow celosia plants took over 90 days to start flowering.. So if you've started from seed, it could take 3 months before you plants start flowering.. Atleast mine did.
-Guess it's not well thought of to have a 2way conversation with yourself so I'll quit with my own and the only follow up to my original post.

Comments (32)I work at a large scale commercial nursery and I'll give you my two cents if you'ld like. That blanket statement that plants in cell packs are bred to be small is partially true, but not because the growers are trying to "trick" the consumer. It's a logistics problem. The more plants a greenhouse can fit on a bench the more plants can be sold in the shortest amount of time. If a fast growing annual...like celocia or impatiens get too large before they are ready to bloom then they wouldn't be cost effective for the greenhouse to grow and sell. So we have a little trick to solve the problem. It's call growth inhibitor chemicals and specialized fertilizers. Not the kind of chemicals that "poison" the plants, but naturally occuring chemicals (synthetic hormones sort of) that are stepped up a notch. They make the plant more compact with super flower-power which makes the consumer's eyes pop out at the store. They take the plant home and somehow it looks much punier in the garden than it did at the store. Most plants will eventually "grow-out" of these chemical treatments on their own, but some just never quite grow to their full potential. Celosia is so easy to grow from seed. It almost grows on it's own straight out of the package. I recommend growing this particular annual from seed because you can choose any variety you like that will fit perfectly in your garden scheme. Comments (13)I'll post again or email you all when I've collected some seeds. The flowers don't look dry enough yet. I'll be glad to share. You don't have to send me anything. Terene - I did have some asclepias seeds last year but I don't think it was viridis. I'll check. Lila - I haven't collected any Zowie seeds yet this summer but will. Got to warn you though. They've been disappointing. The original Zowie seeds did great. The ones I planted this spring from seeds I collected last summer haven't done well. Quite a few have no petals. It's because it's a hybrid. : ( I don't know if all celosia is attractive to butterlies or if this one has more nectar than normal. There's a cultivar called 'Cramer's Amazon' that's supposed to attract butterlies and hummingbirds but it gets very tall and I think it supposed to take a long time to start blooming. I have it on my wish list anyway though. I've had a Buckeye explosion this week. I must've had at least 100 in my yard yesterday and they love that celosia. In the group of five celosia plants pictured above, there were about three dozen Buckeyes nectaring and flying around them. I switched my camera to video mode and took a short 10 second video. I tossed a little rock at the base of the plants to make the butterflies fly up so you can see them. Hopefully you can click on it and watch. hmmm may not be working. 3 years agoI am having the same problem with my celosia not blooming, but I did finally see a small bloom forming on just one of my plants. Can’t wait to see how they do.
