What's Blooming For You That Isn't GOLD?
Comments (19)indigo (indigofera), passiflora incarnata, echinacea, great blue lobelia, hydrangea 'Limelight', Japanese anemone 'Windflower', nepeta, calamenthe, scarlet runner beans, aster 'Ghengis Khan' (this false aster blooms non-stop from early summer until frost as long as I keep shearing spent blooms), roses: 'Pilgrim', 'Tradescant', 'Peggy Martin', glossy abelia (hummingbird & butterfly magnet). Monarda is starting its second flush. Garden phlox 'David' and 'Franz Schubert' are looking awfully tired after all the heat, but still a little bloom coming. Salvias should be on second flush, but I cut them back late. Hosta 'Guacamole' should be blooming now, but is a bit too shaded this year as the magnolia has grown ... time to move it. Chelone 'Hot Lips' and sedum 'Autumn Joy' will soon be in bloom. In dappled shade, fern-leaf bleeding heart (dicentra eximia) is putting out new leaves and will soon have its second flush of bloom. All of the above are pink, lavender to blue, or white, with the exception of roses 'Pilgrim' (pale yellow) and 'Tradescant' (deep red), monarda (red), and the scarlet runner beans which are, of course, scarlet. I don't have one, but I see that the crape myrtles around here are all still blooming vigorously....See MoreBlack Spot Resistant Yellows?
Comments (20)A word of caution: While Valencia is a truly gorgeous rose and seems fairly disease-resistant, I would not exactly call it a yellow rose. To me, it is more a buff color, with a very slight golden apricot hue in the center. Also, it is a bit slow on the rebloom. But if you want it, let me assure you it is a wonderful HT. I really like Molineux myself, but most of the time the apricot shades are quite strong in its blooms. At times it is a yellow/creme blend, but more often it is a yellow/apricot blend--sometimes even an almost pinkish/apricot blend (it changes color a lot--one of its charms!). It has some disease-resistance but I need to spray fungicide on it about 3 times in the spring and a couple times in the fall (high blackspot seasons here) to keep the BS under control--not bad compared to many other roses, but not as disease-resistant as some others. But it is a terrific rose--great rebloomer also. You might check Well Being out at helpmefind.com. Golden-yellow, but with a light pinkish blush at times. Buds are darker--dramatic contrast with the open blooms. It seems decently disease-resistant so far. Now if you want to go to a creamy bloom with a pale yellow center (quite lovely!), there is Elina. You can't stop her from blooming and she is quite disease-resistant. Healthy, vigorous rose. Kate...See MoreSun Gold vs. Sunsugar
Comments (31)Jaune Flamme performs well in my garden. We grew it last year. Thinking about growing it again this year. It works/looks great in a colorful box mix. Our latest always under revision small fruit list includes: Jaune Flamme, Pink Ping Pong, Dark Galaxy, Kiss the Sky, Butter Apple and 4th of July. We're trying Napa Chardonnay and Brad's Atomic Grape this year too. I totally agree with the Sun Gold assessments. It's a love/hate relationship. We've decided to give Sun Gold/Sun Sugar a break this year and will not be growing them. Some of the small varieties we grew last year were Blush, Purple Bumble Bee, Green Zebra Cherry, Kazachka, Cosmic Eclipse, Jaune Flamme, Ron's Carbon Copy, Chocolate Sprinkles, Painted Pink, Black Cherry, Sun Sugar and Sun Gold. The clear winners were Kazachka, Painted Pink and Jaune Flamme. We haven't tried Esterina nor Orange Paruche but would like too. The feedback seems good for both. The seed swaps are done for now but the start list still seems to get modified daily. The countdown has started for us. 4 weeks until we start seeds. Shell...See MoreRock, Herbs, azomite, kelp, crack-corn for flower & disease resistance
Comments (226)@strawchicago z5 Straw, I will get some pictures later today of my Jubilee's. We had torrential rains all yesterday and last night, so all of my plants are a little heavy right now including all the rose flowers that are blooming ;( Once they dry off and perk up from being so close to the ground I'll try to get some pictures, The 2 I have are looking really beautiful though with big fluffy magenta flowers. I took time to smell them all this morning for you. I'm not the best with scent descriptions, but I wanted to try for you- Olivia Austin rose- not very strong scent....can't comment Imogen - typical rose scent (to me) Carding Mill - Beautiful scent, fruity, almost tropical but not too fruity like my Westerlands. Jubilee Celebration - I really like this smell now that I got up close to them to sniff the flowers. It is fruity like Carding Mill, but with a strong kind of lemon zest scent to it. Lemon zest might not sound good, but this is my favorite smell of all the Austin's so far I think. If someone told me a flower smelled strongly like lemon zest, I probably wouldn't love the idea. So maybe that's not the best description of it but I'll try it again later and see if I can come up with a better description. I'm going to order some more of the rose though, I really like it :)...See MoreUser
