Avocado plant question

A coworker and I decided to plant two avocado pits as an experiment to see how they would go. We first did the whole toothpick in the pit, suspended in a glass of water thing. This worked pretty well, and after a few months we moved to soil. Here we are about 8 months since we started this project and we have two plants, roughly 12" each. Recently, we moved to a new office space with great sunlight, however the soil is drying out much more quickly and the plants are looking a bit sickly.

Can anyone tell from the yellowing/brown marks on the leaves what the issue might be/what nutrients we should add? Could this be an issue where the plants are getting too big for the pots? Any general tips? Thanks!

Avocados need a lot of water and well drained soil. They might be root-bound too!

The main complaint of the avocado orchard growers around here is their water bill!

You can get a moisture meter and test the soil to see if it's too dry. Good luck!

Thank you! I'm up in the Northeast, so this guy will live its life inside. I'll try moving to a larger pot and upping the water. In terms of soil and nutrients, any recommendations?

In some parts of S FL there is less than a few inches of soil before it hits rock. In the Homestead/Redlands area where Pine Island is, they have to use a rock auger to drill into the rock in order to plant a tree so that is probably what the person was referring to as your hole being to small. In the rest of S FL with some sort of soil other than rock the size of the hole shouldn't really matter. Your tree looks fine. Leave it alone. Since it is young, maybe you should try fertilizing it more frequently on a schedule to get more growth.

I use to have large potted plants all over my house.When I would cut an avocado I would stick the unwashed seed,pointed end up,down into the soil of one of the plants,pushing it into the soil just until the top was about 1/4 in. covered.Then I would forget about it until I would see it sprouting.Never had much luck having them grow over a few inches tall then they would shrivel up.One time though,I had one grow to the ceiling and start bending over before I let it die.It only had one stem about the size of a jumbo pencil with about 10 leaves on it.Pitiful looking thing.LOL Never had any luck starting the seed in water.

I have (2) different types of Avocado trees ( Mexicola & Haas )....One was given to me, the other I purchased at a nursery.. Will there be serious damage to these trees if I transplant them into bigger pots with the 5:1:1 potting mix this time of year? I live in Texas... One of the trees is in a sandy soil mixture right now and I can see that when I water this one, it takes to long to drain. The other plant that I purchased was from a nursery and he is in a good draining mixture right now. I'm trying to see if it would benefit both these plants to be placed with larger pots and a better draining mix. Just worried if they will recover from the shock of the transplant and/or should I just leave them alone for now and wait till Spring time.

Josh, I would have posted this in that avocado as a container plant thread, but that thing was getting insanely long. So I'm starting a new post for this. I chopped this at the top a few weeks ago. It ended up branching out but one large branch that is completely disproportionate for the rest of the plant. It grew huge leaves at the end and I ended up having to tie the plant to a support to keep it from tipping over. What do we do with this? Trim the branch back? Cut it off?

do not worry too much about the rough looking leaf in the picture. It could be nothing. Avos drop their leaves...and can look rough for a couple of months before leaf-out. As stated above....avos are sensitive to moisture/draining. Get an inexpensive moisture meter (8-10 dollars) and feed it occasionally.
