Growing Melons in Winter in SoCal?

Does anyone know a good way to start and grow melons now in Southern California? The article below describes special beds used for this, and they donÂt sound too difficult. It says melons can be started and grown December through March here. Has anyone actually tried it at home? Growing under glass or in a green house is a problem because it gets too hot during the day, and overheats quickly.
