Northwoods: I used the milk jugs with a mix of cider vinegar/molasses for a number of years when my orchard was young, and they worked pretty well. Caught a lot of moths, though I don't know how many were codling moths or oriental fruit moths but I am sure many were. I just poured an inch or so of vinegar and a few tablespoons of blackstrap molasses and mixed well, then wired the jugs -- with big holes cut in the upper part -- to the trees. I did not add ammonia, since the fumes from vinegar alone seemed to do the trick. Also used electric insect zappers in the orchard for quite a few years, and they killed a lot of moths also. Now I rely on early sprays followed by apple bagging for protection with good results. All of these methods work, more or less, and in most seasons. It's a matter of choosing the one that's the least work and you feel most comfortable with. I'm not certain that switching vinegar types from grain to apple based will make a whole lot of difference. The preference index (PI) for Japanese plum based on total distances moved by all marked adults recovered on Japanese plum divided by the total distance moved by marked adults recovered on other host trees indicated that Japanese plum was the most highly preferred host, followed by European plum, peach, sweet cherry, tart cherry, apricot, apple, and pear, respectively."

Codling moth didn't get to be the worse apple pest in N America by being directionally challenged. If they are bad in your area, they will come. I lived in an area of California where there were none. And I was only miles from the central valley where they had to spray. So there is hope but bagging or spraying is a much better bet. Like others said, once CM have found your tree (and the nearby trees), they will be there. Keep in mind, CM seems to have about 2 generations in a growing season. If you want to go an organic route with Spinosad, you may want to add "sticker" to a tank before you spray Spinosad. It's sticky liquid used as adhering agent so chemical/spray stays on trees/fruits longer. The inexpensive one is called Bonide Turbo Spreader Sticker. You can find it at Lowe's or Home Depot. If you google old Gardenweb thread, you'll see pictures how others bag apples with ziplock bags. The same method can be used on pears.
