How do codling moths find an apple tree?

So last year I painfully resisted the urge to prevent any codling moth attack on my new apple tree, and to my surprise they never came, and my 7 apples ripened (however, the ants did get them). They are all over the nieghborhood but somehow didn't find my tree. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the bizzare wind patters that work their way through a maze of townhomes.

Can someone tell me how exactly a moth finds a fruit tree?
