What is the best flavored green plum/plum hybrid?
Comments (26)Whoa. I had no idea this forum post was updated. Carolyn, Definitely not looking for rot problems. The problem with getting recommendations for my region is that I have not found a reliable source yet - they just say "plums" and "apples" grow well here. I called my county's extension office and the guy was nice enough to email me some informative things but they didn't exactly answer my question about what is specifically known to grow well. Just now, I found an article online that says Frontier and Ozark Premier can be grown in the Southeast. On the other hand, Stark Bros. says Ozark Premier is "the best choice for the Ohio Valley and the Northeast, as well as the Midwest". So I've stayed in a state of flux and just used this forum mainly to see what people's experience with different varieties has actually been. At the time of this posting, I'd decided on Shiro and Satsuma. I want to get them from the same place and I want them the same size roughly so I've had a time locating a source. In the meantime, I've been trying to learn as much as I can and trying to see if there is a better choice to start with than what I have determined....See MorePollination for Geneva Mirabelle
Comments (1)Ted, I would say you will get pollination from what you have now. Mirabelles are considered partly self-fertile and I don't know how accurate that Raintree information is on Italian Prune not working. If you want to be sure get a branch from a friend and put in water by your tree. My Geneva Mirabelle has finally decided to flower this year so I will be able to try them out. I had some Mirabelles off of one of my other trees and they were very non-sour, making them come off as bland. I think they are for cooking only. Scott...See MoreDifferent Grafts on Plum Tree
Comments (2)No, actually it's a good question, blaze. I have a 4-in-1 peach I bought on a lark. Not a big fan of multi-grafted trees, but I wanted to experiment with this one. What you can frequently see happen is that the stronger variety can "overtake" some of the less vigorous varieties. The recommendation is to figure out which is a less vigorous variety, or which graft seems to be lagging a bit, and plant that graft facing south. Place the most vigorous graft if possible facing north. And, keep the more vigorous variety pruned down so it doesn't overtake the the other varieties. The varieties will bloom when they bloom, and will produce just the same as if they were an individual tree. So yes, in that way they do function independently. And, make sure you hang good, permanent tags on your various grafts, close to the trunk. Make sure you loosen the tags and the branches grow in diameter. That way, you're not try to guess what branch is what variety down the road. Patty S....See Morethe best Mirabelle plums?
Comments (16)I haven't mirabelles, but I read a lot about them in french sites. My conclusion is that nurseries and grocery stores sell more easily the Nancy variety because it is bigger than Metz, but it is said that Metz tastes better and is more productive. For example, look at this French nursery site: Huchet nursery They sell both varieties, but they say about Metz "it is melting flesh, sweet, very flavorful. It is more rustic, more resistant and more productive than Nancy variety"...See Moremrsg47
