Mr. Flappers finds 2 friends!!!

At last Mr. Flappers, my Blue Swedish duck, has some duckie friends! I have hunted and searched everywhere close and far for a friend for Mr. Flappers. As some of you know, Mr. Flippers flew away in the spring and left poor Mr. Flappers alone.

This last month I called yet another vet's office and was directed to a local org. called "Animals in Distress". I've been down many similar roads before this, but THIS time I was able to adopt a pair of ducks. They are Mr. and Ms. Pippit, a small male Mallard and his wife, a tiny Call Duck. They are just adorable little things. Mr. Pippit was hit by a car a year and a half ago and has a wing that hangs down and a leg that makes him limp. Ms. Pittit is SO precious and QUIET!!!!??? I wonder why I've only heard her quack three times in the last month...? Winter time, maybe? Last year they produced 8 babies, so I know that he is still functional in that regard.

Just wanted to pass the news along to those of you who knew about Mr. Flippers and Mr. Flappers.

I'm still searching for a mate for Mr. Flappers. Mr. Pippit doesn't like the mating behavior his wife is displaying for Mr. Flappers.... Mr. Flappers is very pleased with it, thought!

They are selling pelleted chicken manure. Actually the chickens from those big farms produce so much waste that they pay the farmers subsidies to use it as fertilizer. I was looking for the old Hoffman cow manure but it looks like it may not be much use. I'm not thinking about raw chicken manure :). I have no idea what form the farmers use, although I could certainly find out in a flash since I know someone. They use weedkillers and inject fertilizers - very different than most imagine. I do wonder if the soil would have made a difference in that Buckeye foliage though. My plants were growing well at the time. That one just looked dull to me. Diana in PA

In September I made a new trip to Cesko. With my friends - Lada Valenta and Gyorgy Tarnok - we tried a new way of conifer documentation. This 3 days action could be named as "digging into the deep". We visited some czech broom masters, who collect new plants as a hobby, and the bests sometimes find their ways to great nurseries. Many thanks to Lada for organizing and to Gyorgy (George)for translating to czech language. Many thanks also for ourselves, too, for the riskant decision of this tour. No one of us was able to find out, what comes. Maybe just Lada, who knows his friends... Mr. Verbin has a gigantic broom collection, far over 2000. He was a bit surprised as we asked him to document only his own selections. Finally his Life Monument was clear for me, and we spent a very pleasant afternoon with the family. Every member of the family gave their own names to the selections, and the Verbin family will live till the end of times in conifers. Great idea. (Some brooms are coming from Mr. Maixner, a friend of Verbin, these will be cleared in the Breeders Hall series in textal versions.) Most of the brooms are never seen and never heard, gems of a new discovery for the new edition of the Conifer Treasury of Cesko 2.0. I bring some archivated photos from the photo album. They did this to ground troops in the Nevada desert too. I knew one who also showed me pictures. He said almost all of his friends died of cancer. Its believed this took John Wayne and most of the actors and crew from one of his films he made in Nevada. Many good men have been taken early just like Mr. Richard do to this stupidity. May they be remembered well and let us not forget. Not everything our government does is good for us. Whether its subjecting men to venereal disease or drugs or radiation to see how much they can take and still perform their duties; its wrong. Those who issue the orders sit safely away, live to a ripe old age and get rewarded for their work while the subjects pay with their lives. It usually takes 50 years for this stuff to be declassified and published. If you think the same kind of stuff does not go on today you are kidding yourselves. Sorry for getting a bit off topic but the shear numbers of lives our government has put on the line again and again without any thought for the people involved does not make me the trusting type. To our government we are all guinea pigs.

Sounds like a hell of an idea Daddo. I know it will sell. We could turn a buck. Maybe manditory reading in tech school ? Here is one of my screw ups. Yes, little old me. Thank god i was over at a friend's house working on his fridge. Installed a new start cap but didn't know the start relay was hanging up. Started up the fridge and went to the living room for a beer. About 5 mins. later i heard a loud and long hiss followed by a very fermiuar burnt smell. We got back to the kitchen and found about 300 yards of wax paper and tin foil all over the kitchen with a completely empty plastic tube that used to be the cap. The top of the cap with the wires and terminals were imbedded into the wall. Changed relay and cap and had another beer. I guess it is still running. It was when i left the next morning. I connected a 16 volt 10 uf cap. with the wrong polarity on a monitor. when it went off my old lady thought i'd fired off a 22 caliber gun in the house. The casing is still imbedded into the ceiling. It took off my thumb nail. Believe me, i have very serious respect for caps and what electrical energy can do. That little cap scared me more than anything i've blown up to date. Yes, we got to get together and write a book. In the next chapter i'll tell you about this guy's PeterBuilt and how the condensing coil explodes taking out the rad, compressor, and grill.

Things may get a little more intense come spring when both the males are vying for the little MS. And she could get hurt if they get too aggressive. But ducks are social and you did the right thing by getting him some friends. If the fighting gets too intense you can seperate them in the spring by dividing their pen with some chicken wire. They will benefit by being able to see one another. A little more work for you with two watering and feeding stations but worth it to keep some peace in the flock. I think the suggested ratios are like 1 male to every 6 or 8 females. But I've had just all males before and that works too if there are no females around they will not fight.

Thank you all. I'm a pretty lucky ducky too! What would I do without them? I watch them for a good share of the day. They fascinate me so much that I can't help myself. :-)

Hey sumac,

I don't mind the extra work at all. I live for it. It's what pulls me out of bed in the morning, just knowing that they're all out there. The chickens are lap chickens. They all heal my soul daily. (Really :-) )

I grew up with birds which was my mothers side business. (She also did bird rehab) She was a nurse but she bred and sold cage birds too. She kept journals about them all. They're full of dates and numbered nest boxes and the colors of the parents, colors of babies, who she mated them with... There must have been hundreds and hundreds of birds, maybe more, that she raised over the years. She bred for color and disposition. I have always LOVED birds. But my mother never had DUCKS!! What was wrong with her??? LOL I have no cage birds, but I have had chickens most of my adult years (I'm 51).

Getting a spring duck baby last year was literally accidental. My son found a very smashed mother duck on/near the road. He saw this movement as he drove past and he stopped. His wife opened the car door and there was this little tiny thing...a baby Mallard. He was doing all the usual hysterical things that ducks do when they're scared. She scooped him up and they went looking for more babies, but didn't find any more. Of course they brought it to ME. I turned to butter. I was besotted. Hopelessly lost and in love with the little guy. He was Mr. Flippers. Then I found this site! I found out that he needed a friend, so I very quickly went to the hatchery and all they had left were the more heavy bodied babies. It worked out great. Then Mr. Flippers flew with the wild ducks, just like I knew he would.
Uh-oh. I'm telling another story. I have to stop doing that. Anyway, here I am with three and I'm still in the same emotional state as I was in the beginning... In LUV with 'em.

Things already have become more intense, so I'm watching them very, very carefully. I've taken Mrs. Pippit away from Mr. Flappers twice because he held her under the water for so long trying to mate with her, so I am planning to seperate them for at least part of the time. I'll only allow them together when I'm with them. I've placed their pools and food on the far side of my patio and can watch them most of the day that way. But you are right. They will need to be separated. I have spent about four hours a day with them during the warm months. Since the cold weather I probably still watch them that long, but it's from the inside looking out more often than not.

Thank you for you advice. I love to hear what other people are doing with their ducks and chickens and I'll take all the advice I can get! :-)
