Advice for new apple tree w/broken branches (pic)

Below is a picture of my new Gala apple tree. About half of the branches were broken near the trunk when I got it and I'm wondering what I should do. I realize I should remove the broken branches but I'm wondering if I'll end up with a weird shaped tree in a couple years or will it take care of itself. Here's the photo:

The branches labeled 1, 2, and 4 are all fine.

The branches labeled 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are all broken at the trunk.

What will I end up with if I just leave those three good branches? Am I wasting my time planting this thing, or am I being overly paranoid?

PS - the tree was recently pruned by the grower.

Thanks!

Bart
