I assume you are referring to Echinacea if they are purple. I've never seen mature Echinacea seed heads contain fuzzy chaff or little brown seeds. Seeds should be a buff/ivory or beige color. Once you remove the outer spikes you are left with a head of seeds. I use tweezers to grab/pull them from the head. Can't imagine you already have mature seed heads so early in zone 5? I learned that a seed grown from a conifer or any tree that has a cultivar will never be named that cultivar. Some of the seed may appear to be the same as the cultivared parent but is not consistent. Is this also true for perennials? ==>>>did you see sara's post in the conifer forum.. addressed to you .... i highly recommend you attend ... anyway .. general horticultural rules ... such as what is a species ... should NOT vary plant to plant .... part of the definition of species.. is that it comes true from seed .... perhaps.. what is confusing you here is that they have attached a cultivar 'name' .. to what is otherwise a species??? ... but then you would think it would be written something like aquilegia flabellata VAR. 'blue angel' ... you should have been around back in the day ... debating nomenclature ... sheesh.. that was mind numbing.. lol ... knowledge is power.. keep up God's work ... ken
