How to care for chickens

We have decided to have a small flock of chickens for eggs (not coq au vin) and have absolutely no idea how to begin or what to do. Anyone have suggestions about breed, when to get them (spring vs. fall), how to prepare nests, any problems to look out for? We have an area of about 1 and a half acres, fenced with two vegetable gardens in it, and hope to let the chickens free-range there. We have a barn with a small stall that had been previously used as a chicken coop with wire, nesting platforms and electricity laid on. We were hoping that the chickens would pretty well provide for themselves with a little supplemental cracked corn. Who is smarter, us or the chickens? Help!
