menace menace menace menace... Wait until they start eating your melon starts (they did mine)...whole yard is full of clover and they need to eat my melon plants! They love small sunflowers...eat the tops right off.

I'd kill them all if I could :) along with squirrels, any bird that eats my berries, and ....

I have lots of rabbits and they don't bother my garden, the deer knock them out of the way!

I've never had the rabbits eat full grown plants. they prefer the new growth. BUT...as a precaution, I always put a wire fence, 12" tall with 1/2" squares, around the plant when I plant it. Rabbits won't jump into a small area like that.

This is the first year I've EVER had them eat my tater shoots, just as they get out of the ground, or even dig for them...soooo...I've put wire around each of them, too.

Between the ants and the bunnies, my crop isn't gonna hold me over till next year, for sure.

Very cute, very bad. If my husband would let me, I'd live trap all the feral bunnies in our neighborhood and move them or something. My dogs eat RAW. Hmmm.

Definitely a menace. My hubby already took out a rabbit for me this year. The air gun is ready to go for the next bunny that tries to invade my garden. It sounds cruel, but the rabbits do such horrible damage to all my hard work that I just can't stand it.

Each year I put up more and more fencing as well. This has helped keep the rabbit mortality rate down. Of course sometimes my neighbor's dogs bring that rate right back up. Too bad my 13lbs wonder of a dog doesn't have the same skill.

Upon closer examination they are definitely eating new growth in my melon patch. Oh, well. I think I'll try everyone's advice in the following order: fence, air gun, beer braised rabbit recipe...

Build a good fence..........then you can have a garden and can still think the bunnies are cute. I have to have a fence around anything that's important to me. (But I still think they're cute).
I believe in live and let live......but it does require some extra work.

Get a hunting license and check your area's laws concerning rabbits and such in a residential area (if your in a neighborhood).

Try to take them early morning when the neighbors are still asleep. The fewer witnesses the better :) Pile up some fresh cut apples and maybe carrots in a convenient spot with good line of sight from your back porch, that way you can relax in a chair while you wait for them. Also get a clean shot to the head. A badly placed gut shot will make the meat taste really gamey, but your dogs would still like it. If there are 2 rabbits take both to ensure you get the female. Good chance they have a hole somewhere with half a dozen baby garden chompers just waiting to explore your veggies.

I gradually extended the chicken wire along the house, toward the gate to the front yard. Then I left the gate open for 2-3 days. When I saw the babies eating the grass in the FRONT yard, I snuck around back and shut the gate!

(and I'm afraid my doggie Frisco is also past his bunny-chasing days!)

If you choose to shoot the rabbits, please don't eat them. They are full of parasites. You can eat them if you experience true winter (snow, below zero temps) and only during the winter time. Cold temps kill parasites and fleas.

When hubby and I buy rabbit from farmers market, we have to use a croc pot to cook it. Rabbit meat is tough, but croc pot cooking softens the meat up a bit.

The right cat can make serious inroads into the rabbit population. Even a less-right cat can work on the small ones.

Last week, I found that the resident menace had dug her nest in my potato bed.

I found a nest of 4 tiny baby rabbits in my raised bed, living among lettuce and swiss chard. They hadn't yet done any damage. In fact, given how many rabbits there are in my area, I'm amazed that I don't see damage from them.

Nonetheless, I evicted my interlopers... definitely a cute menace.
