broccoli question

I had grown broccoli earlier in Feb. I never did get any head as it was eaten by some insect (the florets were dusty in the end). So I pulled the plant out (or so I thought). THe base still remained and now quite a few small leaves have sprouted from it. Will it grown into a new broccoli plant and should I let it grow or should I just uproot it.

I had good luck with broccoli this year - more than my meat-eating family wanted to eat! (I just couldn't eat that much myself).

However, with our -finally - warming weather, most of it has gone to flower. Still a few young ones that are weathering it OK, but our temps are still in the 60-70 range, so the bulk of the plants have bolted.

I left a few flowering ones, because I noticed the bees preferred them, and as I just planted beans, peppers, tomatoes, squash - was hoping they would visit those nearby, and help with pollinating.

I think I'd toss the plant otherwise, it is just taking up space, unless you want it as a pollinator, the crops it produces will be inferior I'm afraid.

Also - I have a few of last years peppers that wintered over, and the Poblano is producing some nice, small peppers - which we are enjoying, but I feel it is better to start new peppers, rather than depending on them perennially. They also take up space as perennials, and I prefer to plant something else in their small cubicle in my box.

Your broccoli should pick up. It always takes mine a couple weeks for noticeable growth after you put them in the ground. Last year, I had the most pathetic peppers, they were so small that I never transplanted them into bigger pots. This year, I transplanted them early, even though they were tiny, into 4" pots and now I have beautiful seedlings. Maybe you need to transplant your seedlings?

Yeah, forget jonhughes posts! He's got veges on steroids! LOL Most of the broc you grow won't be quite that large and healthy. Farmerdill's photos look more like what I grow. It's hard to explain how they look when they're getting ready to flower. It's kind of like the buds "swell" and seperate. They aren't in such a tight head anymore (am I explaining this right?) As Wayne said, check them daily. They keep pretty well in the fridge, but are best fresh. Nancy

Your Brussels sprouts sure are huge to not have many visible sprouts. The summer heat must have been preventing them from growing sprouts. Mine are only a foot tall and have sprouts growing all down the stem now. However, my climate is different and our recent (finally) cooler weather has probably stimulated them to begin growing sprouts. I also planted mine in September.

Some followup questions now that my seedlings have really gotten big since I transplanted them into my 3.5 durapots. Another week or so and I will probably take them outside. 1) Is there a hardening process for broccoli? 2) Is the root system of broccoli very large? Will a 5 gallon grow bag be large enough? 3) For the 5-1-1 mix that I'll be using for the broccoli, after adding the dolomitic lime, would I use the same amount of Dynamite 15-5-9 CRF that I would for tomatoes? 4) Does broccoli need a lot of sun like tomatoes do? 5) Do I need to protect the broccoli from animals of any sort? If not, then I may not need to put the grow bags in my fenced in garden. 6) Should I dust with Bt as a preventative or only at the first signs of cabbage loopers?
