I don't paint my horses, but I do corral them up close to the barn during hunting season.

I've been out by the barn and have had hunters walk through my pastures with electric fencing on, guns in hand.

Drives me crazy...

What is there about a normal person that puts that bright orange hat on their head that seems to be squeesing the smarts of out them. We've had so many "unhappy" incidents this hunting season in our community..one death, and three serious injuries.
Our neighbors 80 acres as well as ours has been posted no hunting for over 30 years.
Last Wed. our neighbor was watching a large buck eating acorns under a tree on his property when the buck was shot, from a pick up on the road.
Soon a young man came to his door and said he'd shot a deer on the neighboring property and it ran over to his and could he please go get it.......neighbor new the guy was lying as he saw the buck shot. And he knows we won't allow hunting so the guy was just plain lying. And breaking the law hunting from the highway. The neighbor gave him persission then locked his gate and called the game warden. The young man was ticketed and most likely will have his liscence revoked for 3 years. Neighbor, dressed the dear, bucthered it out and will take a to the Senior Citizens center that provdies lunchs for about 60 elders every day.

Last year our neighbor had a three month old hereford calf shot and killed.

The hunters shoot deer and cut off the head (they need trophies) and leave the rest to rot. They "field dress" deer and throw boxes and bags of "innards" in the road ditches. Last year our Border Collie disappeared during hunting season.....either some "sportsman" shot her or took her home.

We live across the road from a portion of the huge Mark Twain Forest where the hunters are all welcomed. It sounds like a war zone over there. There is a parking lot there where the hunters gather to have beer parties. This time of the year is a nightmare for those of us who live in the country.

season lasts until after Christmas and there will be another gun season in January.

I used to tie blaze orange plastic strips to my fencing since its right up in the woods. But we have not had one hunter or gunshot yet this season. Archery I don't worry about. Everyone around here seems to be very responsible and since all the woods open into backyards and farms its only the neighbors hunting. We all wear blaze orange for gun season, though.

My golden retriver doesn't go out of the house this time of year without his orange vest and sleigh bells. I've already found one jacked carcass in my woods. They kill the deer and only take the hind quarters.
I even found a note last year on a post on my driveway, telling me not to put my posted signs up soo high, because they were hard to take down.
I'm for hunting, but, i'm scared of the hunters who drink and hunt.

I have a friend whose mother made all the kids wear orange vests when they went outside to play in their own backyard which was next to a hunting woods.

Our large brown dog wears a large orange bow around her neck during hunting season. She isn't anywhere near the size of a deer, but some hunters have extremely poor eyesight!

We found a dead deer on our property a few weeks ago during bow hunting season and it lasted exactly 5 days before it was no longer recognizable. The woodland animals take care of carcasses very quickly around here. Actually, we are pretty sure our dog helped consume the meat. Saves on dog food!

The hunters have been very active in our area this year, I've been hearing an extraordinary number of gunshots.

It's probably a good thing. The deer were very overpopulated, due in part to an elderly neighbor who used to feed them (I'd heard she purchased corn by the ton). She's ill now, and presumably the deer aren't being fed anymore, so the herd probably needs reduction to avoid winter starvation.

And I have only good things to say about the 3 guys I let hunt on my property. They are interested in it for the sport, prefer bow to shotgun, are anxious for the meat, considerate of my animals and my property.

So far this year, they have gotten a total of 4 deer, 2 does, 2 bucks. As far as I'm concerned, that's 4 less for me to hit with my truck and eat the flowers I sell.

They also keep other hunters off my property as much as they can.

What does that mean "painting cows horses...goats--I've never had horses or cows or goats so I wasn't sure....

You paint them orange( spray them) so hunters can tell they are not deer. At least that's the logic. Last week I went out back to find a man with his rifle pointed at one of our free range rabbits less then 50 yards from the house. You wanna talk about someone loosing her cool! I don't suffer from the "Bambi" complex but I can honestly say I hate hunting season. Our Property is posted and so is the property that surrounds it yet this nimrod still managed to ignore that and had the nerve to come right to the house no less. Definitely had his hat on too tight! Even though it is a good mile before any non-posted property we've still had bullets hit the house and surrounding trees. I really feel there should be more training necessary before you can get a licence. We have never had a problem with the locals who's fathers took the out and taught them to hunt out of necessity, it's always the townies who think hunting season is their time to play dress up and pretend to be Rambo.

It's not like that around here and I'm glad for it.

One more day of hunting season. I hope my husband can get a deer for our freezer, but the dog will be so happy to have that silly orange bow off her neck!

I say make it a bit fairer. Try jumping a large grizzly with just a bowie knife...that will give you the maximum "adrenaline rush". lol

I jumped a grey squirrel with a fully loaded mak 90 assualt rifle with an 80 round drum clip. I unloaded the entire clip! There wasn't much meat left. Just kiddin' lol.

Wow! And I thought I had problems from hunters...don't get me wrong, I don't think all hunting is bad. But they whiz down our dirt road so fast that I don't let my kids outside alone. I'm afraid they may wander into the road. Not to mention the dust...you can't hang clothes out on the line during hunting season and many days it's like a thick fog on the road...but at least I haven't had to worry about losing my dog or getting shot at myself! I'll take my own problems. Thanks for the perspective!

Hey Ya'll, I live at the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail with national forest all around. My neighbor's dogs run free all year and I worry about them getting shot. CAN ANYBODY RECOMMEND A NON TOXIC BLAZE ORANGE PAINT that I can put on the dogs? Thanks,

I make a big bow out of the neon orange surveyer's tape and have it on my dog's collar year 'round.

Our neighbors goat got both front legs shot off one year.The bulet continued down through a yard hit our upstairs wall.The tub shower unit sat right inside.I heard it hit.
Another bullet in spout above my picture window.We had a cat shot,and about 2 years ago someone shot my one Texas Longhorn steer ,he lived ,it went straight through his neck.I heard the shot it was just getting dark.Its crazy.Doesnt matter if youre posted,or fenced.
One year I was out feeding animals.I spotted a deer just inside our fence running along the fence.Outside the fence is a dirt road,Therewas a man pulling up ,backing up following this deer just waiting for it to jump the fence so he could shoot it.It went down through our pasture.,

I just moved to the country. I have found 5 deer stands on the property and more on neighboring property. 4 are old wooden structures that appear to not have been used in a couple years, the other is metal and new. The previous owner did not hunt and did not allow hunting and it is his belief that they were all put up while he owned the land.

The wooden ones I pulled down and burned, the metal one I have left, but stuck a weatherproof note to it stating that its use will require written permission. Last weekend I found footprints around the tree, but none of the "indicators" I placed were tripped so I know they didnt go up the tree.

I am not opposed to hunting but my wife is wary of guns and we have two young children.

I must admit it is unsettling to know that given the popularity of hunting around here and the number of deer walking MY property is potentially dangerous.

Yesterday evening, I took 4 goats and my dog out for a hike on our property, we eventually made it over the hill to a gas main break (large open dirt path that runs for miles) the trees were thick on the sides with small trails running everywhere. I was getting so nervous about the animals getting shot. It was pretty unnerving. I'll be sure to put bells on the goats now. I saw a few hunting stands and recent boot prints. I hate bells because I love to see the wildlife but forget it. You'll hear us coming a mile off.

To slightly hi-jack the thread, for which I apologise, but in response to Robin's comment a few posts above about his/her worries about her neighbor's dogs (which gave me cause to worry about Robin's safety!) - while I fully appreciate, and share, your concern for your neighbor's dogs, you have NO legal right to do anything to them, even if you are doing it to protect them, without the neighbor's express permission. Even if one of the dogs should be shot, it's his right to have them loose and in their natural colors during hunting season. If your community/county has a leash law, which is generally enforced, you might be able to make a case that he should have them locked up/tethered/etc., and get it to happen. BUT, the word WILL get around as to who lodged the complaint, and you may end up with an irate neighbor, which is not a good idea. You CAN go to him and ask, but if he says "NO", them you can't do anything. And if you spray the dogs without asking first, he will probably still be able to figure out who did it, and be angry. Upsetting as it is for you, if talking to him is not effective, there is NOTHING you can do, legally.

When we lived in NW Montana, we knew a farmer who had a cow shot and the next year he painted COW on the side of a cow, and some jerk shot her right in the middle of the O. This is what give hunter's a bad name. This is not sportsmanship.

I breathe a sigh of relief every year when hunting season is finally over. The duck season just ended here, which means for awhile I can enjoy riding my mare on the trails down in the canyon along the Snake River without shotguns blasting all around us. I just cannot give up riding altogether during the long hunting season, (big game in the mountains in the fall, birds in the winter down in the valley) so I continue to ride, but with much caution. There just isn't anyplace to ride where I can get away from it. Some hunters are most cautious, considerate, and polite...and then there are the ones with "Testosterone Poisoning" who display no semblance of caution and reasoning whatsoever, as well as those who assume that drinking and hunting go together or it just ain't as much fun. So I will finally once again be able to ride in peace and quiet in the lovely canyon for awhile...until the weather warms up enough that the Rock Chucks come out. Then it all starts over again...with people blasting Rock Chucks to bits just for the fun of killing. Ugh! (Ever heard the echoes of shots fired in the canyon bouncing off the canyon walls? So loud...no peace.:o(
