peach tree issues

I am new to gardening as I have just bought a home with a big yard. The yard already has a peach tree - not sure about the age of the tree. Now I see some issues with this tree:

1) gel like thing oozing out of the tree on few branches
2) bark of the tree does seem to have ridges
3) fungus kind of thing has grown on few branches.

I read about bacterial canker for (1) and some have suggested to cut down those branches. Is it okay? what about 2 & 3? I'll attach some images.

I am looking to prune the tree so that it is ready for spring here in CA.

Too late for this year. You have to either fungicide in fall or early spring before the leaves come out. Any leaves that you see changing colors right now got infected while the buds were breaking, and having fungicide on the surface of the leaves isn't going to do a darn thing to get rid of the infection inside them. Don't worry too much about it; it's not typically lethal. It'll make your tree waste energy, though, so you might want to thin the fruit and make sure they have plenty of water. How did your tree die last time?

It is shot-hole. There are several diseases that give it. The main treatment is copper at leaf fall and copper at pink in the early spring. There isn't much to do about it now other than thinning out the limbs a bit to make sure enough sun is getting in. Sun helps dry leaves quickly and limits diseases. Scott

Water and other issues with young peach tree

Thanks for the input. Is it your experience that peaches are thirstier than other trees? My concern is that it seems to use much more water than everything else. Also, any ideas on the leaf spots? I forgot to mention that they get water once a week 20 minutes from Nov-June and twice a week 15 min from July-Oct. When temps exceed 88 they get an extra 50%. I spaced the fruit about 6" but I allowed fruit closer if they were on alternating sides of a stem (i.e., growing away from each other). Is this ok, or should I prune more fruit? AFA the spraying goes I tend to go after everything in the edibles section early before the damage begins. The frequency is due to the very mild potency of this stuff, which is gone in a week, especially with the heavy dew we get overnight from now through June. We just get a lot of munchers here, especially caterpillars/worms/lopers. I will lay off the peach tree until I see something.

Yes, crescent moon shape is plum curculio marks. Need to spray. If you want to go mainly organic, look up kaolin clay called Surround. Spray first at petal fall stage and every 10-14 days depending on how much rain you get. Look up Spinosad, another pesticide and see if you like to use it. Plum curculio is enemy number one for stone fruit like plums and peaches. Another pests are Oriental fruit moth, stink bugs, coddling moth, etc. Nothing much you can do with canker. A healthy tree will heals itself. During a dormant season, consider spraying copper as fungicide and bacterialcide as a preventative measure.

Vijay,

Your tree looks pretty rough, you might want to strongly consider planting another peach tree.

Peach trees can be replaced easily, grow fast and come into bearing fairly quickly, so it's not as big an issue to replace them, as say an ornamental or an apple/pear/Euro plum tree.

In terms of pruning this tree, it's generally recommended to prune out canker, which I generally do. I pruned a row of peach trees today and found canker on one scaffold. I cut it off.

That said, I have one peach tree in my yard I like very much. It has had canker for several years and is slowly in decline. If I cut off all the canker, it wouldn't have any scaffolds left. I've made 4 copies of the tree and my plan is to cut the mother/cankered tree down once the copies start producing.

But like I said, ideally it's best to cut canker out.

I think your tree has Valsa/perennial canker, not bacterial.

Peach trees respond wonderfully to severe renewal pruning. If that were my tree I would remove all that old wood and keep that one newer trunk only. The tree will fill back in in no time.
