We grow hops because my husband is a home brewer. I thought I had a better photo than the one I've included, but I can't find it at the moment. If you decide you don't want to grow hops, be very thorough removing it. It spreads like wildfire and will sprout from just the littlest bit of rhizome. Here is a link that might be useful: Hops

Well, all I'm now looking at is a stub left where this glorious vine had been thriving, my fault for not giving it a good drink late last fall. It was getting to be very substantial plant that had measured 45 ft in total length. After its extreme hair cut, I expected it to explode with new growth from the base, but so far just one dominate shoot is coming. SCG, the plant was blooming when I had received it via mail order about 8 or 9 years ago and has flowered every year since. Wisteria loves sun and heat, I wouldn't go planting it in an area that receives a lot of shade. It also neeeeds a long warm growing season to ripen off in the autumn and believe me it's slow to do so.

Newbie here, I'm in Colo and need a job currently, hint. Colo has legalized cannabis growing at state level. I have done 100's of different cannabis graft experiments. I want to thank you guys for your input as many of you are speaking over my head. I picked up some awesome new ideas with this read so I decided to just dump some cannabis grafting knowledge and pics in return. This thread has contributions for over a decade so much has been discovered in cannabis recently. Rather than give you guys some 'Abstract' here I'll dump words for you to google if it strikes interests. starting with X/Y Chrome's. Yes, that is very accurate as threads mentioned earlier. I have not seen any success grafting monocot to dicot out side of a test tube (enzymes or particle bombardment) . Diocese , some plants of different families, have a hermaphrodite gene MeGI and the DOI gene influencing the MeGI gene to turn on hermy attribute of the MeGI gene. Cannabis and a variety of diocese plants have this gene (has been found), Con sed by phrep/phrap enabling very strange graft mates,, and with some post on this thread gave me some ideas for breeding.. Ive seen aggressive cannabis in humid domes send roots from the scion into the root stock in a variety of plants so at bare minimum the cannabis scion became a parasite to the root stock. In most cases my success in cannabis graft were side 'whip cuts' grafts with a slow cut/removal over weeks of one of the plantS main stem from the ground/medium. Mentioned earlier about grafting plant with different chrome's. Those guys were correct; I have killed many plants (not hop/cannabis), most die. However with different glue concoctions we have had rare graft mates, it was tedious and basically we did damage at the graft- then glued with hormones and hot wax type hardening glue and removed root stock from medium over wks/mths. pain staking for nothing worthy of consumption. Cross over. I read about hops/cannabis graft cross consumption in an earlier post and ironically enough, that was our experience with one graft in particular. TomatoBis was odd in that it took off in days and the fellow student removed the root stock of the cannabis plant in 1 cut. It was one of the ugliest graft I had ever seen by a fellow student. The darn cannabis plant took over and dominated the plant at 70% in the end. Cannabis sativa L. var Lemon Head grafted to root stock tomato vine type. in the photo provided. All of our grafts offspring in other experiment also-inert mules- except cannabis to cannabis graft mating. Currently had a strange outcome Cannabinus pollen to Cannabis female and vise versa except that Cannabinus is perfect flower. Still waiting on maturity of Cannabinus seed pods, excitement is high. However this was a first for me, anyone explain, the cannabis plant female pollinated x Cannabinus , the cannabis seed pods got enormous. When the cannabis seed pod was opened the ovule, it was empty. False pregnancy or aborted embryo's . IDK, I didnt expect anything to happen. Meet TomatoBis, got lots of dead plant pics to, lol, Novelties. Red Toms that turned yellow and and faint lemon taste and a fiber texture that made them more displeasing to the taste Buds excuse the pun. The cannabis flower hermaphrodited and buds lost value due to lack of quality potency and a poor taste . When the Tomato part of the plant was disposed it gave a very strong odor of cannabis and that part of the plant had been removed days earlier .

My experience in California growing hops was a good one. You start by buying a small twig like thing called a rhizome. They have an eye like a potatoe that you plant facing up. I have very sandy soil, and they seemed to love it. I started growing them in the ground, but they are quite invasive, so I began putting them in plastic 55 gallon drums that I cut in half with a skill saw (about one third of the drum's height for each "half", pitching the band in the middle). It took me a couple of years, but pretty soon that rhizome formed a massive network, and it was easy to cut off chunks, and start new barrels. When I moved I left these for the new owner, and I think he wanted them! I wish I had a barrel now to start another set. There are several varieties, but Cascade seems to be the hardiest for Texas, and its a very common hop for beer making. The real trick, though, it that they have to go up...like 12 ft.! I attached two tall 4X4s to my back fence, and ran clothes line between them. The I put twine vertically down to the barrels. When they are ready to harvest, you have created a big green wall of hop plants. I found a website where some guy in Texas makes his own derrick like support for his hops. I'd prefer a South facing fence to protect agaist the wind. You don't really get that many hops by wieght, and I would simply brew with the fresh picked hops to avoid the need for drying. They can be dried by sandwiching them between a couple of screen doors for a couple of days. My buddy just told me that hop prices are going through the roof right now, so a home brewer could justify the work in a couple of years. The plants are quite pretty, and some people weave baskets from the stripped vines. Hope this helps.
