Our local Future Farmers of America chapter is hosting their annual fundraising poultry auction in Topsfield, Mass. on Sunday, Oct. 15 from noon until around 4 or 5pm.

If you're in northeastern Mass. or southern NH and Maine, come on over to the Topsfield Fairgrounds (junction of Rte.s 97 and 1) and bid on or sell some nice birds.

The FFA kids get 25% of the proceeds to fund their chapter activities. Up for bid are laying hens, bantam chickens, ducks, turkeys, guineas, geese, gamebirds, bunnies, cage birds and more. There also are non-live items such as feed, bushels of apples from local farms, small farm equipment, carrying cages, nest boxes and whatever.

If you want to sell poultry (except waterfowl), they must be blood tested for pullorum and AI. They should be boxed in sturdy cardboard boxes, cages or crates that close securely and that the buyer can keep to take the birds home. I always put fresh bedding in the box, an some poultry feed and chunks of juicy apple or other fruit to keep the birds fed, hydrated and comfortable.

It's always a lively event with plenty of auction excitement. Entire families come to sell and bid! A lot of kids get their year's 4-H project at the FFA auction.

If you have an afternoon or just an hour or two to spare, come on down.
