Spraying Surround and how to use other sprays?
Comments (6)That sounds good, dude. I will be including sulphur with my first Surround sprays after petal fall. Every Surround spray I do includes either sulphur, oil, or Serenade for diseases (the oil is also for aphids; Saf-T-Side oil is the best brand, it also helps smother diseases like brown rot). The sulphur and oil cannot be mixed, you need to wait a week or two between. If you are using a light mineral oil such as Saf-T-Side it will evaporate completely in two days so sulphur can follow oil pretty fast, just not the other way around. Oil is not recommended with Surround but I find the way it evaporates quickly means it does not interfere with the Surround sticking to the bugs. Make sure to get a major coat of Surround down in the beginning. I do two sprays in a row for the first spray, with 3 cups of powder per gallon, to get a very thick coat down. If you do two coats in a row you can include a sticker in the first coat. Then refresh whenever its looking thin. With Surround you always need to be looking at the weather to see when to refresh, if it looks like more than 1/4" of rain is coming you may as well wait til after the rain. Sometimes that means suffering a bit more curc damage in the interim. Surround is definitely a challenge to use, you can't just follow some spray program template. Comments (4)Languard, I'm not trying to talk you out of organic, but please don't assume, organic = safe. Some formulations of sulfur are more acutely toxic than many synthetic pesticides. For example lime sulfur has an LD50 of around 500 mg/kg body weight. Similarly, Bordeaux (copper sulfate and calcium hydroxide) has an LD50 of around 500 mg/kg. Most modern synthetic pesticides have an LD50 > 2000 mg/kg. I'm on another fruit forum tailored for commercial growers and researchers Following is part of a post from a commercial grower on that list named Mo Tougas: "We too use lime sulfur and I agree that the benefits are numerous. Twenty years ago we bought sulfur by the ton as our non synthetic fungicide of choice for the production of peaches here in the humid northeast. That ceased when a friend was hospitalized due to a severe allergic reaction to my peaches. I was told it was an allergy to sulfur. I decided not to argue with the emergency room personnel."...See MoreKaolin use in the south
Comments (1)All of the formulations of Surround WP that are used for crop protection, are patented. It is very unlikely that anyone licensed to manufacture those would offer anything but volume discounts. I don't know of widespread use of the product in the SE. During years with normal rainfall of about 50 inches, it may not be economical to use it, as it has to be reapplied after each rain event. There are, as you noted, many locations in the south, where the white clay is extracted, usually by surface mining. I have purchased it in powder form and in a slurry (slip) for ceramic & porcelain molding. There are many other uses, including medicinal, Kaopectate (kaolin+pectin), being the most recognizable one. If SurroundWP were available locally(it isn't listed by my supplier), I would hesitate to use it without the advice of the State Dept. of Agriculture. Rb...See MoreA place to buy Kaolin Clay?
Comments (6)Well keep an eye out for it locally. I know you have a pretty good feed store over there somewhere so go ask if they have heard of it and can get it. Fruit tree people use it if they are organic so it might be around but unless you seem to know what you're asking for, the agriculture people don't offer many suggestions. That's probably a good thing since they have access to some pretty nasty stuff. And while you're there make sure you check out the prices for 50lb. bags of stuff like alfalfa and seed meals. Ag prices are much cheaper than most consumer stuff. I've tried to get to know the local feed store people because they offer me better bulk organic fertilizer prices than the garden stores and they have more experience with what works locally. The one over here is pretty organic and gets bulk seeds too. He also mixes a good organic fertilizer combo that he sells. I've seen good results with it in the community garden....See Moregreenbug
