Apples breaking dormancy, in January??

Hi all,

My Anna apple buds are swelling and turning white for bloom. This is not good! we recently had a warm snap in Southern California.

Should I pinch off the blooms, or let them be? I fear if I pinch them off, I will not get any apples this season?

Leave them they might make fruit. Pinching them off isn't going to help even if they get frozen off later. Unless you are in a frost prone area of Socal, your chances of a crop are good.

Thanks. If the buds are blosomming, will the tree start glowing leaves them as well? As of right now, the tree has no leaves so I am concerned there won't be any energy for the fruit.

Did you fertilize? I hit my roses with 15-30-15 fertilizer than they all woke up like crazy. Now I will switch to Virgo fertilizer hereon. I am getting some very strong breakout from root/graft areas. my plants are 10-yr old. I also have two bare roots that I planted a week ago, they were very weak when I got them. I hope they breakout too.

In many parts of southern California, we don't really get true dormancy. We get . . . .a "pause" -- naptime for roses, as it were, in late December and January. During that month or so, many of us run around like lunatics doing all the relocating, de-leafing, dormant spraying, pruning, new rose planting, etc. that we intend doing before naptime is over in February. Now in mid-March, the new canes are well advanced. I love the new reddish leaves, all soft and perfect (I try not to think about all the bugs and fungal bad guys who attack them later in the season.) Better yet, I've got buds -- lots of them, even on new plantings that just went in the ground six weeks ago. (Can't wait to see and smell Sugar Moon)!! Just as I was "encouraging" my roses and complimenting them on the progress they'd made so far (don't laugh -- I think they appreciate it. . . The converse also works -- several of them have been scared straight, as it were, by the threat of Mr. Shovel!) I saw something I almost missed. There on a back branch, peeking out from behind a very large (too large) jade plant in a neighboring pot, was my first rose of the season. Ta-Da!! Francis Dubreuil, headily fragrant and dark red marvelous as ever. It begins.

The coldest I recorded is those few nights in January, when it was so bitterly cold outside. the lowest reading I got was 21. It's a little (6'x12-15')room at the back of the second floor; no heat vent, windows on three sides and two skylights. Half is over an open back porch, and the other half is over a similarly unheated butler's pantry. I initially rejected it as an over-wintering spot because it was still warm when the figs lost all their leaves in the middle of October and I moved them in. Of course, I also was keeping the door open at that point (for the light it brings into the hallway) and it was siphoning heat from the house. I started keeping the door closed in December when I realized how much it was costing to heat the room! (Just moved in in August, still getting to know the house.) I need to leave the thermometer in there for a few seasons to get to know the spot. I lost all of the dancing fairies I had in pots, but the jasmine I never bothered to move seems to have held on. My old spot was perfect (I thought) because it went down to just below 40 and stayed there. Never below freezing, but never more than a few degrees over 40. I need ot find out how much the sunporch fluctuates -- or is that really that big a deal? I had such a bumper crop of figs last year I'd already started dreaming of what to do with this year's batch!

Hi Jen - I live in Minnesota - the Minneapolis area. You don't say how big the pots are. Are they 6"-8" that they came in? Or are they planters? In another thread titled "A Really Mild Winter" I wrote: "I always find myself buying at year end and over wintering in large planters that get moved to the garage. I place them on the wall that is attached to the house. Although the garage is not heated I have found that when the temp hits 45 or more outside, I have hostas coming up in the pots in the garage. Which is not a bad thing because I will pot them up and put them in my sunroom. One year I had a Blue Mouse Ears in full bloom for Easter!" The last few winters have been wacky here that's for sure. I think it was 2003 that we hit 72 one Saturday in mid-February and I was tanning on my deck. If they are in larger planters I think you could leave them out covered - and then bring them inside the garage in February for some early green! Good luck and keep us posted on what you do. Teresa

mmm, so what are you going to do?
Unless you are going to build a refrigerator around the tree there ain't much you can do.
Patience, wait, and watch.
And accept that you may have a reduced crop, or not.

Or build a weather machine.

Same here in the SE. Anna and Golden Dorsett are starting to bloom same as last year. Even if you get lucky and don't have a hard freeze bee shortage in the cool will set one ugly set of apples.

The tree will grow leaves when it needs to. These trees always bloom very early and sometimes twice a year. Don't worry in Socal you'll get some apples this year.

I think Anna and DG are notorious for breaking dormancy early. My Anna and DG look on the verge of breaking dormancy, while the fuji and gordon are dormant.

I once had a Anna bloom 3 times in one season in So Cal so I think you will be OK

I wouldn't worry too much about it, it happens. I think you'll still see a decent sized crop.

My blueberries are now doing the same thing. Silly question, how soon after bloom do new leaves usually appear?

So why are you complaining. You have good weather too. 5 of my fig trees and one blueberry tree (Rabbit-eye) started to bloom I was naked dancing in the street and took them inside and provided growing lights and heat. IT Is cosing me more than the fruit I will get. But very happy, my little grand kids are bragging to their friends at the school saying my grandpa can make food.

Anna is supposed to bloom right now. I have an even lower chill sport of Anna that started to bloom two weeks ago. The regular Anna is just starting to bloom. it's a little late this year compared to last year. Dorsett golden is also getting going.
