Strawberry varieties

I'm going to plant the following: 50 Allstar, 25 Earliglow, 25 Honeyoe, and 25 Jewel. I have enough room for 25 more out of these varieties to choose. Which would you choose and why?

Earliglow. It tastes best, hands down. It's not the biggest fruit, but I care a lot more about flavor.

The only one of the recent good French varieties that I know can be found in the US is Mara des Bois. Quite a few places are selling it now. I have grown it and it is an excellent berry. I have looked for Gariguette and Charlotte without luck and expect they have not been imported. Scott

If you look around on the net you might be able to locate companies that sell some of the older varieties. Two heirlooms that worked well for me in South Jersey were Fairfax and Sparkle. Neither is particularly popular since they have too much sugar to be shippable, but for flavor they couldn't be topped.

I'm very eager to try Archer, but it's already sold out at Krohne and Indiana Berry, and everywhere else I can see it's something like $45 with shipping for just ten bare-root plants. Anyone have a bare root Archer or a plug they can send my way? Thx... (and don't worry, I don't mean send to Israel, I mean New Jersey!)

Seascape might overwinter ok if highly protected. Mine were not protected well and all froze out after 2 winters.

Earliglow is the best. Fruitgirl is right. The first three strawberries on each plant well be a nice size but they get smaller from there on. Here in Michigan be sure to lay straw on the plants over winter or you my find half of your strawberry plants not making it through especially if we have more winters like this one. Good luck JOHN
