Evergreen huckleberries not sweet?

zzita

Hello folks!

I'm new to this group, but I grow a ton of fruit, so I hope I can be a useful contributor :).

I want to ask about your experience with evergreen huckleberries. Mine make a decent quantity of fruit (not a huge amount), but it is not as sweet as I remember the wild ones being when I was a kid in the Siskiyous. Is my memory wrong? Is the cooler summer climate in the Willamette valley where I now live the problem? Or is it just that commercially-propagated varieties are selected for looks and hedging, rather than fruit flavor?

Or (and this is what I hope) is there something I can do? I'd like to grow a lot more huckles, and am wondering whether to propagate from the bushes I already have (very easy this time of year) and change some cultural practice, or if I need to buy new, tastier ones from somewhere else.

Thanks so much for any words of wisdom :).
