Double A Vineyards (rakgrape.com) out of Fredonia NY has a huge selection. Also you can just internet search the name of the variety you want and add the word "bareroot". Seeded vs. seedless is not so much the issue, as American (vitus labrusca) vs. European (vitus vinifera), due to the vastly superior disease resistance of labrusca. Note that all seedless grapes have some vinifera genes. Top seeded labrusca grape choices would include Steuben, Cambell's Early, Price, Alden, and Kyoho. Seedless varieties would include Canadice, Jupiter, Glenora, and Mars. If you are going to plant more than 5 vines, buy "The Grape Grower" by Lon Rombough

Double A has the varieties and the Documentation to answer all your questions.And be more open,and consider more varieties.
Concord is neather the best Tasting,and neather the most deasese resistant.
Also there are more than one strain of Concord,some better than others.You will have to do your Homework.

Thanks for the input. I guess living in MA I've always been drawn to the Concord grape but I'll definitely look around and see what else would do well in my area.

I've looked at the two online stores that were suggested and one of them has two year old vines and the other is one year old vines. I found another site (link below) selling 2 and 3 year old vines and the price from 2 to 3 jumped quite a bit.

I'm having trouble finding info as to at what year they will produce fruit. Should I definitely go for something 2+ years?

Well If you really insist so much for Concord Grapes just go to Walmart and Lowes,or Home Depot and get them in the Spring.They also have Catawba,anotherBlack rot prone grape.Get both so you can grow a lot of black rot.!!!!!

Dude, why are you being an ass? I'm completely new at this and everyone else has been extremely helpful. I thanked you for your suggestion and said that I would research other alternatives.

I happen to like Concord and have wanted to grow them but didn't have that option living in Boston. I now live in the 'burbs and have some space.

I've read plenty of posts on this site of people in my area that have successfully grown Concords. I was asking an honest question about good experiences at local nurseries. You could have made a suggestion on other disease-resistant varieties since you are apparently such an expert.

You probably need to get out of the yard for a little bit and get laid.

Concord is an old variety that has been greatly improved upon, but people still want it due to name recognition. It should do well for you, as it came from your area, but it is not the most disease resistant grape around. It ripens late, and many of the improved Concord-like varieties ripen much earlier. Take a look at Miller Nursery. They have several Concord-like varieties, as well as Concord. They have a pretty good reputation for a large nursery. However, if you really just want Concord, you can get it at just about any big box store in spring, which would allow you to see the plant before buying, so you could choose one that looks healthy.

Many years ago I ordered some Concord grape plants from some catalog or other and they did very well, which surprised the heck out of me. When we moved we had to leave them behind (boohoo) just as they were really starting to produce lots of fruit. A couple of moves later we have a little space again so I bought a plant from Lowes. Took 2 years for the poor thing to die of black rot, no matter what I did for it. Good luck in your search!

I never had an impression of you after your first message. It was after the second one where you showed that you're a complete ass that I formed my impression.

This is freaking forum about growing fruit, not about world politics or the meaning of life. What is the point of these forums if you can't ask questions and learn? In your three posts you have yet to make one alternate suggestion. You have basically added nothing but a big pile of steamy manure to this thread.

Calm down, abfield. You need a lot more patience if you're going to be a fruit grower. Please don't be calling people asses or making suggestions about their sex lives. Herman may not have been the most diplomatic, but he has had plenty of experience and was trying to be helpful. If you check some recent threads on grapes, he has listed a number of cultivars that worked for him.

In my limited grape experience, I'd have to say that Herman is right. I had one good crop of Concords about 10 or 12 years ago. Since then, black rot has ruined the grapes each year. I've tried fungicide, cutting down to the main trunk and cleaning up underneath to no avail. My neighbors have the same problem.

But part of the fun of growing is trying your own thing. If you want to grow something, go ahead and try. It might work for you. If it doesn't perform, no big deal. There are no guarantees, just probabilites. OhOh, I'm getting into philosophy now.

Again, I thanked him for his suggestion. Then read his next post, he was sarcastic and not at all helpful. He got me to think about it and I'm looking into other varieties. But he was just a smart ass about it. I didn't say he didn't know what he was doing. I'm admittedly new at this. But, some people who have experience have no patience for someone who is not as knowledgeable and they come across as pompous. There was no need for his worthless sarcastic post. He could have made suggestions about other varieties or just been nice about it. That's why I say I think he needs a life.

I think what we may have here is some misperceptions on your part due to differences in writing styles. I have read a fair number of Herman's posts before. He is a specialist in grapes, and tends to have very firm opinions in this area. When he expresses them, they may sound a little condescending, but I am sure that is not his intention, and equally sure that Herman is not a bad guy at all, who probably has a life many of us would envy.

When I post a reply, I have to re-read it several times before hitting the submit button to make sure I do not come across as a know-it-all, condescending s.o.b., and I often make changes when I see something that looks bad. Of course, the best way to do this would be to have someone else read the post before submitting it to see how it sounds, but that is not practical. Most of us who participate in Gardenweb understand this, and try not to look for reasons to take offense.

One thing is for sure: Sexual references and direct personal insults are not at all common here. That is one of the things that makes it a pleasure to participate in Gardenweb. There are plenty of websites for that sort of thing, but they usually do not involve gardening.

Hi,
I am new to the group and just stumbled on it looking for grape growing information. I also have Concord and 1 Catawba. I built a large grape arbor about 7-8 years ago and bought these vines because it is what my Grandfather and Father grew. I am curious about this thing called black rot, what is it? I should also add that my vines are doing very well and the grape production is over the top each year. Now that I've said that I have probably jinxed myself. Also what other varieties would you recommend? I would like to plant more next year.

I live in Indiana and now have some land to start growing grapes for wine making. I've read alot about making wine and know several people who do, but no matter what I read or discuss with people I always get conflicting results. I'm reaaly trying to find a hardy grape for Indiana that is rich in health. I understand the type of grape and the length the juice stays on the skin is important--any suggestions?

My mother's Day gift was that my son and husband helped me repair a very old grape arbor, that bore abundant and wonderful fruit we made jelly of when I was a child. One or two of the vines are still growing and now have support, but I am wondering about the wisdom of buying s few new plants to get the arbor growing again. I'd love to hear suggestions for new varieties or hybrids of Concords, which is what we always grew. Or should I go with something else? And should I rake up the litter under the arbor and/or mulch?
