Temperatures have been high, in the 90s. I hadn't seen the blossom drop one, just blossom end rot. I just now read it, thank you. The flower on the bottom HAD opened, for sure, the one above it did not though and there is one over the other side, which also opened. All of them started to shrivel at the same time. I have at least 3 more female flowers coming up right now, so fingers crossed they do okay. They haven't opened yet, but should within the next couple of days I think. Got plenty of males floating around right now (3 open today, fortunately there are like 5 more currently growing with about 3 at around the right stage for when the females open up!) so I guess we'll see what happens. Would you recommend hand pollinating these new females?

That's the ONLY one that has gotten near bloom, and it never did (I tried pollinating it myself, guess I'll see how it goes.) It's 90f by 8am right now, so unless these things are opening at 5am, they aren't blooming. Almost every other squash is dying early on the vine long before they even get close to blooming. Any ideas? :) (1st and third pic are the same plant, middle is my other one)

I think you can blame the zucchini for the strange flower troubles. Some of my zucchinis grow rather large without the flower ever opening. If they aren't picked they they die similar to the way you described. I only ever notice this strange behavior early in the season, as the plant matures I don't notice the problem anymore. I have never seen this problem on acorn squash. I wish I could tell you what causes this I am rather curious myself. It doesn't sound like a serious problem though as long as some are opening you will get fruit. In the future you should just pick the ones that grow but fail to open and eat them as summer squash.

Helotesscribe, In my experience this is caused by one or more of 4 different things. 1) Wrong amount of water. Water more or less depending upon situation. 2) Not enough nutrients. Fertilize with 10-10-10 plus trace minerals. If spraying onto plant leaves, add a natural fertilizer, such as fish emulsion, to provide vitamins. 3) Wrong pH. Adjust pH of soil by adding dolomitic lime or sulphur. 4) Cultivar is not suited to your region. Find out what your neighbors are growing, and grow those cultivars. A lot of people also have trial gardens and plant a few seeds of several cultivars to see what grows well for them. For example, I have planted well over 100 cultivars of pumpkins just to find less than 10 that are well suited to my soil and climate. Good luck.
