Thanks Ellie for the reply....I've since located the info on the web that describes homosexual behavior in ducks of the same gender when that's all that is available to them. My two female ducks take turns in who mounts who, even though the pekin in about a third bigger than the blue swedish. The only thing you have to look out for is the much higher cholesterol in duck eggs. I get a kick out of this guy on utube who does a taste test comparing chicken to duck eggs, and says the duck egg tasted "gamey". He must have gone down to the local bog and stole it from some mallard nest. The truth is, domestic duck eggs taste just like the chickens next door, and since they're bigger, you get more bang for your buck (just watch it if your cholesterol is high). I may have wandered off the subject a bit, but if you want to make a pet of a duck, they are more than willing to comply; unlike my chickens who have been raised the same way, but arn't near as friendly.

If it is a pekin duck it will turn white. But, if your not sure of what kind it is, then it may not turn white even if it is yellow. My muscovie was yellow when he was a little baby, but now he is gray.

Ruthie, I just bought them for pets. I love ducks and I've only had muscovies and mallards and I wanted to get some different kinds and watch them grow up and then give them the best life possible for them. I didn't for no toher reason, I just want them for loving pets. Sullicorbitt, I bet they will be adorable! Send some pics when you get some! I'll send some of mine too when I get some!

Most domestic ducks are quite simalar in temperment since they're derived from Mallards. The lighter weight breeds do seem to be a bit more skittish though. Since ducks are 'prey' they are naturally quite nervous birds especially if you don't train them to eat out of your hand, etc. (which is easy to do when they're hungry). They settle down as they get older too. All the females are quite loud. As 'cherrycircus' said, the males are chatty, probably more so than the females, but their voices are fairly quiet. My loudest duck is a female Silver Appleyard. She's also my favourite. She seems to have more character than the others. My tamest, quietest and smartest ducks are Muscovies. I don't have a problem with them because I only have females. A small group of males will usually get along quite well too. Problems and aggression (with males) arise when you have both sexes. If you want quiet and calm then female Muscovies are a good choice. A small group of Mallard-derived male ducks (especially one of the larger breeds) will also be reasonalby calm and quiet.
