Chickens and Ants! Can I kill one without killing the other?
Comments (7)One homemade remedy you might try: mix icing sugar half and half with baking soda. The sugar attracts the ants, the baking soda kills them. Apparently they cannot expel the gas it creates... Place the mixture in a narrow-ncked bottle (like a ketchup bottle or milk jug) on its side in the yard. Chickens should not be able to get the bait and I doubt it would harm them it they did. The ants will carry the bait back to the nest and it should wipe out the whole colony. If you do try this, please let me know how it works. It was some kid's science fair project and I have had good results using it... but would like to hear how it works for others....See MoreAdvice on stopping hawk from killing chickens
Comments (24)Pretty sure you can shoot it with a permit in some states, not sure. Either way I think the easiest solution is owning roosters. I live near a lake with a lot of birds of prey and my roosters have killed many hawks trying to get their girls. I have issues with the large owls personally, they have even broke into my coops and kill for fun. I absolutely hate birds of prey and wish my roosters could slay the owls too. I'm not down to go to jail over birds but I have told my neighbors who also hate them I know nothing if some of them go missing around here lol. Plenty of shotguns in our neighborhood going off when we see them flying around, the wild quail population has skyrocketed this year! Also, if ones attacking your pets or livestock you have the right to protect them within reason. I killed a hawk with a golfball sized rock once that was attacking my cat, killer aim to the head! No regrets, heft vet bill and my cat lost its ear....See MoreHas anyone built their own chicken coop/hutch?
Comments (7)Always remember to make it predator proof, chicken wire on the floor is important, also if you can around the perimeter just underneath the soil as this will stop the sneaky foxes and mice from digging in around the edges. The other point I'd like to make is that quite often (unless you really want to do it yourself) the cost to build one from scratch is more expensive that purchasing a coop through a company that ships them. Not just in materials but also in time and tools that you may need to go purchase. If you've got all the tools and some excess building materials around the yard, then sure it might be worthwhile - there's some good info here: https://www.coopsandcages.com.au/chickens/chicken-coops/ These guys give you a fairly accurate guide on comparing the DIY or ready to assemble chicken coops....See MoreKill the Chickens or Not?
Comments (49)Hi, Just in. My stand-in chooky keeper reports that we are getting two eggs a day again. So great to hear she is back doing the laying thing. Thanks for everything. Goldhills, I will look into this. I will endeavour to snap a better portrait. I just asked for a very large chook and a lady who knows a sister-in-law, who runs a mobile kids' farm, sourced the chook and said it was a RIR. It looks just like the RIR in my "Backyard Chickens" book, which has colour plates. But will check :) Cheers, Grub :)...See Morevelvet_sparrow
