carrots for storage, part 2.

I've planted carrots before but there's a lot I don't know about them. So here are a few questions. The answer to #4 is most pressing at the moment, since it's time sensitive.

1. Do carrots "ripen", i.e., have a best time to harvest? Or are they good anytime, like potatoes?

2. I'm particularly interested in storing them over the winter. Is this best done indoors? I store potatoes, onions and squash this way. The garden is a hike in the snow, so I'd only store them in-ground if it were a superior way to do it.

3. For best quality winter storage, is there a peak time in their maturity to harvest them?

4. When is the best time to seed them outdoors in order to harvest them for storage? And when should they be harvested?

5. How long into the next year do they keep?

Thanks for your advice!
