wood eating black ants?

Can anyone suggest something to kill black wood eating ants?

They don't respond to typical stuff and just relocate and eat another area :O

Our builder had this house sitting for a year before we bought it, then its on an acre of wooded lot. Those 2 environments lead us off on the wrong foot with these critters.

This has been a 8 year battle.

Not sure if you are talking about carpenter ants but if you are they do not eat wood. They tunnel through the wood to get their food. They will eat termites so if you think they are carpenter ants you should check for termites.

other black ants often are just "looking around" your house for food. If the wood is moist try to dry it out by grading your lawn away from your house or looking for areas where water enters the walls or basement (window sills?)

Also move all wood (piles of debris or building materials) away from the house. If there are any rotted trees near the house I would have them removed. The ants could have a hideout there and just run to your house to look for food.

if you find out why they are there (rotted wood, searching for food or termites even) then you will be able to get rid of them.

Also, I once spent a couple days redoing my landscaping once and ended by putting in nice new wood mulch. After a day the mulch was crawling w/ carpenter ants. I removed all the mulch and replaced it with landscaping rocks (I picked red-lava rocks that look like cedar mulch almost) and the ants left. If you have any wood mulch I would remove that from any landscaping near your house.

are these white legged ants?We have ants here in hillsbough county,fla.that are killing trees.My neighbor has lost 13 trees on her lot.I have also lost that many on 3 acres.I have been spraying with carpenter and termite killer to try to control these for over 2 years.They have also been eating pressure treated wood.We no longer have carpenter or the red ants on our land.We need to have something done before no more trees will exist.

I'm in zone 6B too, and I had problems with ants during the heavy rains we had earlier this year. They never got to the buds, but they did have many a good meal on the leaves...and I never saw any aphids on the roses that they covered. Only the ants. I sprayed with soapy water (real "homemade" soap that contained lye)with a little borax mixed in, and that took care of the problem. Thrips are here now, and PJP is one of their favorite roses. Had to resort to Bayer on that one. Hated to do it, but I hated watching all those gorgeous blooms get ruined even worse. Does anyone know of an effective organic way to treat thrips without resorting to pesticides? Thanks for any pointers. Lora

Thanks to all responses. I am brand new on the Butterfly Garden Forum, so please bear with me while I learn the system. Thanks to runmead & christie for the Terro suggestion. I will look for it. Also like the Gain detergent idea from organic kitten--sounds like it's worth a try also. Elisabeth: Great input and good info on the Senna. I occasionally do raise some of the eggs to chrysalis/butterflies. I make butterfly garden "hatching jars" for the children at my grandson's school. WE do butterfly garden walks (my garden) during the spring. My sennas and casias are also covered with eggs & cats. I really need to prune, in prep. for the storms heading our way, but can't do it while there are so many new babies. Rhizo 1: My problem ants are mostly very tiny or little larger black ones. No fire ants on my host plants. Siam: My best nectar plants are the fire bush, jathropa, cosmos (re-seeds itself every year and can reach a height of 8+ feet during the summer), native floss flower (ageratum?)-- please excuse my lack of proper names--spanish needle, & pentas. Host plants: scarlet milkweek, several varities of the passion vine--one a native that comes up by itself in my garden, key lime & calamondin, cassias & sennas. I also plant parsley, dill & rue. Oh yes, I have a large Dutchman's Pipe that the Gold rimmed swollowtail loves. Maybe some spider problems on this. During our winter/spring growing season I plant nasturshims and have collards in my vegetable garden. I would be interested in what you grow and what butterflies we might have in common. Other than the ants being a nuisance, do you have proof that they are causing any harm (especially to plants?) They do help aerorate the soil, and that's a good thing. I'm definitely no fan of them. I dealt with a bunch of fire ants on one corner of my garden yesterday. Blasted their antpile with the water hose, poured vinegar over what was left, and then poured liquid and dry molasses on them (which they apparently don't like). I think they'll probably just move elsewhere. Otherwise, I just note where they are and try not to let them get on me. I've never had any luck getting them to completely go away, and that's probably a pointless battle. Good luck up there in CO. I sure do miss that state...

Carpenter ants do not digest wood like termites, but excavate galleries to nest in. The frass they produce looks like tiny shards of wood, not exactly sawdust, but very similar. You would likely need a magnifier (at least) to see what it actually is. You should inspect above the ceiling, and even consider removing some of the ceiling if required to gain access.

Ants eat either sugar or grease, and borax kills insects.

So go to Walmart and buy a box of 20 Mule Team Borax. Mix a bit of it with sugar, and mix another bit of it with grease, and leave them out in separate bowls near your foundation where animals can't get to it, such as inside the holes of a concrete block with a brick over the top. Once the ants find it they will carry it back to the nest and wipe out the colony.
