You see how they're starting to turn a little yellowish? You've waited a little too long. They'll be good but, they would've been a little sweeter had you picked 'em a little sooner. Remember, you're growing them for yourself, to get maximum FLAVOR, not maximum POUNDS. With these "Burpless" cukes, your gonna have tons of cucumbers anyhow. So, be choosey pick those cukes when they taste the very best. You deserve it! My son is doing kinda the same thing. Rather than pick his "Yellow Crookneck" squash when they are young, sweet and delicious, he waits until they've grown to super-market size. The seeds are larger and the flavor has lost a little of that "creaminess" I call it.

Wilting occurs when a plant cannot absorb moisture through the roots as fast or faster then it loses moisture through the leaves. Because the shrubs are not established, are suffering from transplant shock and are in a very warm location, you should expect this problem often for one or two summers. To minimize wilting, you could: maintain 3-4" of mulch past the drip line; add compost to the soil; water 50% than normal if your soil is sandy (1.5 gallons of water for a new/small shrub); use shade cloth if they get sun during the warm part of the day; water the night before the weather service issues wind advisories. It is very common to see mine wilting now as temperatures reach into the 100s. There is only so much you can do when the weather does not cooperate. Check them often during the first two summers. Once they become established (or "adapt"), the wilting episodes will not be as severe or as often. But you will still have some wilting episodes.

The red dots are just where I am assuming I need a light. I havent decided on pendants, recessed, etc yet. I've got double hung windows that will have have about 5 inches of wall above, plus maybe 4-5 inches of trim. I'm not sure how low the lights can hang there, but I do really like the look of pendants. I don't have a lighting budget decided yet, but will likely go with more budget friendly options on things that can easily be changed down the road in 5 or 10 years when I may be itching to change things up a little bit. I dont want to spend more than necessary, but will invest in quality XYZ if it will save us time and money in the long run. I do like the style of lighting in that first pic, and I also like schoolhouse pendants. My house is a 1905-1911 (unsure of when it was built!) American foursquare. The chandelier in the dining room, has been here since at least 1950.. I really want to pick lighting that compliments my kitchen choices and the era of the house and also make sure I have plenty of lighting in the right areas. I am going for an "evolved over 100 years" mix of old and new and am open to ANY suggestions. Thanks!!
