Forget the seed warming mat!

Ok, I just wanted to share my frugal seed starting way...

I was looking for a warm place for my seeds, but couldn't find any. Our fridge is cool on top, and our water heater is in the garage... I was considering buying a seed mat, but then I remembered how I one time put a cake in the cold oven to store it overnight, but left the light on, and the next day the icing was ruined because of the heat generated by the oven bulb.

So, I put a bunch of seeds by the window for comparison, then a bunch in a clear plastic container with lid, and wrapped it in a towel to keep the light out at night, and ALL of my seeds in the oven sprouted in 1.5 days!! The seeds in the window haven't done anything yet.

Forget the warming mat! ;-)

I agree that you don't need a warming mat. In fact, I misplaced mine so when the seed starting season came up, I had to improvise, too. Every time I use the clothes dryer (which is nearly every day)I sit covered seed containers on it. Works great and promotes quick germination.

am I alone here? from what I have seen in American in all be it only 10 months the heating come from the floor? I put a cage over the vent in rooms we don't use much such as sunroom, laundry, formal living, then I got cocky and used the main rooms, the cage was set above the heating and the cage was deflected into the room also, so we could still be roasty toasty, what I used, I am not sure I found them in the wood behind our house? it looked like they where used for holding many plants in tubs about 2 inches high and looked fairly flimsy but held up to seedling, although not a tubs...haha, scwished flat! loads of air holes in them and we closed off alot of vents in the rooms we don't use alot but the air still warmed them through the metal closer, was getting temps of 120 if I forgot to take the glass lid off, fried veggies anyone?

I was curious about the heating pad v seed warmer difference too but mine is mostly for some plants that seem on the edge of unhappiness from the poorly regulated temperatures. I reckon if I can help them through to longer days than more light will help them too. "Water risk" is balony, IMO. My partner's (not so bright) ex made what was essentially a 6' heating element wired into an extension cord. I had to pack her stuff (yup) and when I saw that I was alarmed. Fortunately she's a dilettante and had forgotten about her (messed up interpretation weed filled) fling with what she called permaculture. So apparently some 15 years ago you could buy bulk heating element but I strongly encourage you to follow at least basic safety precautions. If you plug it in and the naked element scorches you, that's not good.

Rudbeckia Seeds - heat mat or not?

My Rudbeckia seeds just came up in less than a week with no prechilling. The pot sits on a 70 degree mat covered with wrap which I just removed. They are in an unheated greenhouse with about 8 hours of added light, because my greenhouse is partially shaded. Without enough light they will be very spindly with a weak stem. When they get about an inch high I will take them off the mat. I would do it sooner if the weather would warm up a bit. Your fluctuating house temperatures will be no problem for them. Al

Nothing. Just different labels for the same thing. Some are thermostatically controlled, others are auto/factory set to specific temp. And they come in all sizes and with all prices - Burpee's prices are high compared to many other sources I've seen so shop around. In this case one comes with a metal spacer to prevent direct contact with the plastic trays which can be a good thing as some of the others will melt the plastic trays. Or you can buy one without and make your own spacers. Dave

brian6464, Here's my 2 cents. I'm sure Smokemaster and others will add anything I miss or their own opinion ;-) The thermostat probe should be in the soil for best results, that's where I place mine. You really don't have to worry about the small gap caused by the probe wire. For most pepper varieties the sweet zone for best germination results is 80 - 87 F. Covering the top with a blanket obviously helps insulate your trays but you're not going to be able to use it once your seeds start sprouting, they're going to need good light. With respect to watering, even with the heat, with the dome on I rarely have to water more than once every week. The dome should keep things moist. Once your sprouts start growing you'll want to remove the dome to facilitate air flow. If you keep it on you'll risk developing algae or worse damping off fungi. At that point just water when you see your sprouts wilting or the tray feels light like it is just dry starting mix. When the dome is off, If you're still using the heating mat to germinate remaining un-sprouted seeds, you will have to check those cells daily to make sure they don't dry out. I usually use a mister to keep the starter mix moist. You can buy moisture meters but that would be overkill squared! Hehehe. Using the vents crossed my mind, but the two that let out enough heat are in the kid's rooms, and putting seeds in there (or over any other vent, really) would end in disaster... I'm glad to hear the idea works tho! Maybe I'll try once the kids are bigger.

Watch yard sales for water bed heaters. They work great.

I was thinking a warming rock for reptiles would probably work great... I've seen these at yard sales too.

I have an old fashioned oven that uses a gas pilot light. It keeps the inside of the oven a little too hot for starting seeds, but if I put some object between the oven door and the frame to hold it open slightly the temperature of the inside of the oven is just right for starting seeds that need warmth. I just have to be careful to check them often so I can take them out as soon as they start sprouting because its dark in the oven and the seedlings need light.

I start my seeds in a spare bedroom and just turn the heat up in the room and put the seeds up high where the heat accumulates. You could do the same thing using a small space heater in a closet or bathroom. Another option, if you have the stuff, is to take a submergable aquarium heater and put it in a large jar of water (not touching the bottom of the jar), place that in a covered aquarium with your seeds. The jar of water will act a mini space heater. Cover the top of the jar with foil to prevent the water from evaporating.
