Baby duck! Help please!!

Hey, Anastasia has been sitting on her eggs for 31 days today. Today when I went to check on her a baby had hatched from the egg (I guess it hatched) and it was already dead :( It looked like it wasn't developed yet...there was yellow stuff (like a big yellow glob) attached to the baby under its tail kinda. What happened?? I've never had this happen before...Do you think something was wrong with it? What was the yellow stuff?? It looked like yolk from an egg. Wouldn't it already be developed after 30 days of her sitting on it....Please let me know if any of you guys know something..or if the other baby ducks that haven't hatched yet might have something like that wrong too?? Thanks!!!!

It was egg yolk. The bird was not yet fully developed. They don't hatch that way, the egg had to have been broken by the mother or something else. You don't say which species your duck is. If it was a mallard derived breed, she has not been setting tightly for 31 days, unless other females have been laying in the same nest. If it was a muscovy, it was not yet ready to hatch. They take almost 35 days to hatch.

Hey all. I've been watching over this wild mothers nest for weeks now. But when i checked it today i noticed the eggs had hatched and there was only two left un hatched. )( Mother and babbys weren't there. I even checked the cracks and logs for any lost babbys )( So i picked up the first egg to poked a hole in it. Yoke came out. So that was a bad egg. I picked up the second egg and well There was a little beak sticking out. So! I made its hole bigger so it could come out than i looked around for the mother. I could find her. So I ended up taking the baby duck home with me. What should i do? Right now its on a heating pad/shirt. I have the number for a rescue center to call in the morning. Will it be okay over night? We got 2 baby Mallards 4 days ago--may 4 days old. I read all the posts on this forum to figure out what to do. One died w/in 12 hours--it kept getting in the water and then was all soggy. The one left seems ok but now I'm worried that he is not eating enough. He has starter and greens, water and a heat lamp. I hold him an hour a day right next to my skin. Tomorrow we get 6 Buff Orphington pullets and I'm going to try to put them together so he has some company. I don['t know what else to to do for him.

Where are you located? You should get your local newspaper to do an article, or maybe a local tv news program to interview you and Thor. It's a little difficult to ask people to make contributions more or less blindly. These days, I like a lot more information before I would send a contribution. I expect most people feel the same way.

I'm no duck expert...but I'll give this a try. Since there was an injury to it's head, do you think it's possible that ducky may have had a brain injury as well? A car is a big force against a little duckling, even if it wasn't hit. Might it be in shock from the traumatic event? I'm sure you would have checked the legs for possible problems by now, so there's not much I can think of asking about something wrong with the legs. Any chance you can post a few images so we can see how ducky is doing?
