bed prep for sweet potatoes

I essentially have two questions:

1. Do sweet potatoes like compost?

2. What depth of loose soil do sweet potatoes require?

My decision is between planting them in a bed that is 6-8 inches of homemade compost above a thin layer of cardboard above a slight mound of previously amended but somewhat compacted soil, or (in another bed) removing the cardboard and double-digging/sifting the mound of previously amended but heavy soil.

I haven't received my slips from Sandhill yet - I must have been late in ordering - but I'm thinking they're imminent, so I might not have much time to do the double-digging plan. If they don't need much more than 8 inches to grow and develop (normal roots should be able to penetrate the cardboard, I think) and wouldn't mind the compost, that bed would be my preference.

Thanks!
