I can't give you a picture but I can tell you how I do it if that will help. The leaves have a pronounced and large "cup" shape but are quite flexible and grow to a large size before the head begins to form. I use spring-type clothes pins. Lightly pull 3-4 of the large leaves together over the head make a small fold of the tips and put the clothes pin on the fold. Plenty of room for the head to grow inside that large cup. Honest - once you see it it will be clear as can be. ;) Dave

"Did you blanch them at all? Does sound like they're starting to bolt..." I know how to blanch when cooking. What is blanch when growing? I'm just wondering why the heads look loose. Are they immature still or going to bolt? Maybe it was just the oppressive heat this year. I wish I could get a picture in here, but it does not seem to work for me

Beautiful cauliflower plants! My experience is that the larger plants produce the larger heads. Your plants look normal to me and I'm guessing you're going to see signs of a cauliflower head soon. Also, if your "All Year Round" is not self blanching then you'll likely want to tie the leaves to cover the head (which will keep it white). I usually use a 1 inch wide strip of cloth. The elastic band taken from old underware is actually (IMO) the best.

Fran, The cross has been done with a heading broccoli. It's called a broccoflower. I don't see any reason why a cross with a non-heading broccoli wouldn't give the desired results, at least in the F2 generation. Have you tried blanching the little heads of the non-heading broccoli with opaque paper bags to prevent the chlorophyll from developing? It would be tedious, but you'll probably have to do the same thing when you breed your non-heading cauliflower to keep the "curds" white. Karl Here is a link that might be useful: Broccoflower
