Chickens and Backyard Plants in the Shade

I know about plants but not about chickens. Friend asked for help - she has lots of shade in 50'x150' fenced yard; wants low growing plants to grow for her pleasure and safe for and from chickens - about 18 girls, I think. She has grown shade-tol grass but has to replant in NC because it is not winter hardy and girls raise it ever so lush then demolish by end of fall. Any help out there for her? I thought maybe clover, kale, natives like blue-eyed grass and geranium would grow but not eaten to stubs, but I really don't know. She can separate seedling crops from the girls with chicken wire fencing to grow up before they forage, but needs something perennial and reseeding. Thanks for your help.
