When would you replant green beans?

I planted 4 rows of green beans all at the same time. Jade, Contender, EZ Pick, Blue lake. The Jade popped up within a week, The other rows have hardly anything. I planted on May 11 in Indianapolis. The Jade and EZ Pick are this years seed, the other seeds are 2-3 years old. Also the bugs are already eating up the beans already.

I'd go ahead and replant. The beans should have germinated by now.

If they didn't come up in about 10 days max, they're not ever going to. Either bad conditions or bad seed or critters got them.

Here in Detroit area, I can plant beans anytime from about mid-May to as late as the end of July and still get a crop from them, so I'd say you are roughly in the same time frame.

As far as the bugs go, I don't know what is getting them, but I've had good luck with bush beans by dusting about every 5 days with a mix of half Sevin dust and half the generic, dollar store equivalent of Gold Bond Medicated Powder. Seems to keep the bugs and rots (like Botrytis if its really wet) away.

Overall, though, I now mainly just grow pole beans -- they seem easier.

The date on the package doesn't take into account your soil, weather conditions, or rainfall. You are a better judge of when to pick. We have Contenders, too (and by the way, congratulations on choosing one of the best bush beans!). When the green beans are as big around as a pencil or slightly smaller, pick. The smaller beans are more tender and flavorful. You are in for a taste treat! You didn't ask, but be sure to pick only when the plants are dry (not dewy or rained on) and pick about every other day--beans come on fast!

It's not at all too late. Plant away! In fact, a lot of people recommend making successive plantings of bush beans every 2-3 weeks through midsummer, so you'll have a continuous supply of beans. You could probably plant through mid- or late July, depending on when your first frost is in the fall. I have a chart that says for a fall crop of beans, if your first frost is usually around October 30th, you can plant around July 30. Bon appetit!

Oh. I thought different vegies needed different ratios of salt and water, for safety reasons. Is that all wrong? Different veggies may benefit flavor-wise from different brine levels but that is a matter of taste. As long as you use one of the recommended salt brine levels - see salt brine charts referenced above in Joy of Pickling (JOP) for example - then you can safely ferment any vegetable or mixture of vegetables. This, of course, assumes you use the proper fermenting techniques too - enough brine to cover the amount of vegetables, time, air temps, cover, skimming, etc. Dave PS: Randy - feel free to start a new thread. The fastest pole bean I have is Neopolitan, it shot up to 8 feet while the others were just getting started, also had 100% germination. The second fastest was Goldfield, 3rd fastest was Garafel Oro. Fastest bush is Purple Queen, nearly 100% germination, tall strong stems and have buds before any other bush bean. If it gets too hot and dry, mulching helps. But why did you compost the bush beans you had? Was there a reason you didnt let them go to produce second, third, 4rth flushes? Maybe you didnt like that variety once you tasted it?

It might be advantageous to replant at intervals to spread out the harvest. Bush beans tend to bear pods in a couple of flushes rather than continuously.

Agreeing with the previous posters, but I'd first dig up a few and see what they're doing.

Any that don't come up in about 9 or 10 days will not be viable even if they come up. The center leaves will be missing.

I planted that many rows for canning. My Mother, Sister and I pick from the same garden. I planted different varieties just to see what produced the best. My choice is Jade so far as you can imagine!

I plant bush beans every 3 weeks until mid August. That way we will have a steady supply all summer for my market booth.

Jade will produce all summer, no need to replant. They do slow down for a while but will keep producing.

It was very rainy in May. beans don't really like soggy conditions, especially with cool nights.

I agree with the ten day rule. if they havent popped by then, they arn't going to. Also, I stay away from bug killers. I use my old cranberry juice 64 oz bottles. just cut the bottom of and remove the label. Voila! instant cloque. That will pretect the young plants from almost all the bugs, as most are ground pests like snails and slug, and earwigs. the shape of the bottle lets them get nice and big before I have to remove it.

I'm down south of you and planted for five bushes of three different green beans (fifteen total) in May with plans to plant more at intervals up until the end of July. Well, only two to three of each of the varieties germinated and grew so I'm going to stick some more beans in where the others didn't come up. There's still plenty of times.
