Rouen or Mallard? How do you tell the difference?

I have either 2 baby mallards, 2 baby rouens, or one of each. I looked at the pictures on feathersite of both babys and they look exactly the same! how do you ever find out the difference?

There is not much difference colorwise between the Mallard and the commercial type Rouens; standard Rouens have more defined colors such as in the breast color and colored part in wings and lacing in the body feathers. Size will help you make a determunation as they age, commercial Rouens are somewhat larger than mallards and the keeled standard Rouens are much larger. I will try and get the 3 gray breeds I have up on my site, Mallard, Call & Rouen. Then you can see them.

I had Rouens and they were much larger than the mallard. The mallard was shorter and skinnier than the Rouen. But until they are closer to full grown, they are pretty much the same.

Very new to growing. I am the brown thumb in my green thumb family. my grandfather could bring dead plants back to life, i killed them. receently, ironically after his death, ive been able to grow and keep plants alive. this is my eureka verigated lemon tree. after newly getting my meyer lemon tree which has already bloomed, ive been concerned about how this one is doing. i found the term sucker branches in my search that lead me here. i am concerned something needs to be trimmed for the health and growth of the tree and i have no idea how or what to trim. In early december, the lower branches bloomed (however my husband didnt water it the week i was away and the tree dropped leaves and the buds). are any if these branches needing to be removed? i purchased it about 10 months ago, the bottom branches were not present at the time of purchase i believe

tell a dip from a tet---how do you do it

First, can you ask the grower/hybridizer what their ploidy is? If not, do you have any registered plants, both tets and dips that you can use to test the unknown plants? If you do, then number the unknown plants and very carefully, cross pollinate them with both dip and tet plants. Seed pods will usually form in both instances but will only mature and produce viable seeds if the ploidy of both plants match. Air pods, those with no viable seeds in them, usually fall off in about two to three weeks. Get out early before the bees get into the pollen. Any flowers that look like something has scattered the pollen, don't use for your tests. After pollinating a flower, take a small piece of clear mending tape and fold it over the end of the pistil to protect it from insects. If you keep good records, then after about 5-6 weeks, you should be able to tell which is which.

hmm, i think i have catnip myself, its lemony (probably lemon scented catnip) upright growth but with triangular serated leaves, its been threataning me with flowers for weeks now and is covered in buds, but none have opened. i think it has pinky-purpley flowers. i bought it last year and it grew about 6" tall and had many stems, this year only 1 stem, but that stem is about 2'6" and branched all over with flower buds covering it. i gave some to one of the cats to test it for reactivity, (not all cats are reactive to catnip) it took hte leaf, sniffed it, picked it up, chewed it. i thought oh its releasing the scent. nope it hten ate the leafe made a choking noise and wandered off. ??? *is confused by foolish cat*

Hello from Ft. Lauderdale, I am the go-to guy in my nursery for ideas, answers to questions, etc. I sell hundreds of both palms each month, and can tell you the basic visual difference. Cat palms are considered understory palms (in nature, grows under the canopy of taller plants) so are conditioned to like shadier areas during the heat of the day. They like LOTS of water, can actually take being overwatered, but no drought. They grow to about 7 or 8 ft. tall in the ground, often shorter in a pot. The stems of a cat palm are rather bulbous towards the bottom as compared to the pencil-thin and pencil-shaped stems of the areca palm. The cat palm has relatively few stems, perhaps a dozen in a 10 inch pot, the areca many, many usually thinner stems. The areca will grow to 18 to 20 ft. tall in the ground with the stems growing correspondently thicker, and by necessity is fine in full sun, and to perhaps 10 or 12 ft. in a large pot. The cat palm will therefore take more shade for a longer time (indoors, for example) as long as adequate food and water are applied. Cat palms can tolerate full sun, but will usually get an overall yellowish appearance in the leaves from too much sun, which will green up again when the hot summer weather turns cooler.

Mallards are wild duck and if you are going to raise them to eat, are not as mild as the Rouen which are good for eating. Mallard tastes like wild, it is darker and has a stronger taste. Not suggesting that you cook one and see. And, as the other's stated, Rouen are larger than mallards.

Where did you get these ducklings? If you found them wandering around, they may be wild Mallards. Rouens can't really fly, so I don't think you'd find them very far from their farm. Rouens get big really quick. I raised a Mallard duckling & 2 Rouens... the Rouens outgrew the Mallard very quickly.

The oldest mallard/Rouen is probably being named Daphne so I can call her Dapphy (Daffy) for short. I cannot think of any other names though. None of the names I pick seem to fit them. Can anyone give me any suggestions? I am thinking about Jax for one of them.

Shera, Hey. Daphne is a cute name. So is Jax You have 3, right?

Here are some names I thought of. Maybe you'll like them. I'm not sure, though!

Apple
Miracle
Donald
Daisy
Sadie
Lacy (that would be a cute name if you have a white duck)
and so would Ivory
Precious
Shadow

Here is what I've named our ducks: Jake, Topaz, Snowflake, Sue, Shadow, Jamoca, Troy, Rose, Striker, Shere-Khan, Jordan, and Apple :)

I have 18 more baby ducks on the way, I'll have to give them names too. Maybe you or someone else can give me some suggestions on naming all them too!!!
