You won't regret the Polka(70d) selection. If you like the synergistic selections as I am leaning toward you may want to give in to them for the entire season. Followup excellent bicolor choices are Charisma(74d)and Providence(82d). I'll admit that the choice is highly subjective. I was raised on IoChief and Silver Queen, two huge eared varieties that my parents loved and I thought were better suited for livestock feed. But although my prefered corn for eating is a SH2 variety, I find that the isolation requirements and poor germination in colder soils make them harder growing choices. The synergistic varieties get my vote as both grower and consumer. It isn't surprising that people are paying more attention to Kernel texture in their preferences. But while some would consider a variety like Incredible to be very tender, others might call it mushy. So to help you to decide for next year I'd suggest that you visit a few farmers' markets in your area and purchase a few dozen ears from vendors who will reveal the names of the varieties that they offer. If you are drawn to one variety you can return and ask the grower more about that variety.

The Gurilla method is just go ahead and sprinkle lightly some all purpose ferilizer (10-10-10; 15-15-15- etc). Other method is to have your soil tested. Yet the other method comes from your observation and experienc. How other plants are doing, or have been doing? About NPK N= nitrogen will manifest itself in plants color and vigour. Too much "N" can burn and/or may prevent plants from flowering and bearing fruits. "N" - cannot attach itself to soil, as it is water-soluable and excess of it will leach down. Therefore the "N" should be supplied and appied continually, gradually as needed. P= Phosphorus, attaches itself to soil and stays there. So then it is not necessar to apply more of it if your soil is already rich in "P". But fortunately, there is no TOO MUCH phosphorus. Since it has no bad side effect. K = Potasium/potash: It is semi-durant. That means, it can go down with water little by little but not as fast as N. So then you have to replenish it more often than P. Like P, K does not have bad side effects either(generally). Your plants will use P and K as needed. But watch out for N; It can be deadly (grin)since it is force-fed into plants.

Oh goodness!! 'What a can of worms' I think I have opened regarding my preference for the 'old' less 'sweet' varieties of sweet corn!!! I guess it may be a matter of our genes as to which we prefer as there is a difference even in we of an older generation as to which we liked best! Yes,I remember the field corn back then didn't have a name ... just a hybrid number & college kids could earn some money detassling the hybrid corn in the fields back then. Shumways catalog still has that hybrid corn seed for sale in their catalog as do nurseries in the farm areas around the State.. Yes, 'wertach' ... the field corn was edible for only a short period of time before it was no longer edible but still if picked at the right time it was SO good cooked in a pot of boiling water, slathered in butter with a salt shaker near by... oh, and a lot of toothpicks!!! Haven't kept track of this site, but do the 'sugar inhanced variety people' outnumber the old corn flavor preference people now? ha
