My chickens dissappeared!

I took advanatage of a warm sunny springlike day to clean out the chicken house. I opened the doors and shooed them all out to free range. I let them free range from time to time. They like it a lot under the bus beside the chicken house and this is usually where they go.

I went about my business cleaning out the chicken house and piling it on the other side of my chicken manure pile - have to keep the old and new manure separated. Here's the pile:

When it was all clean, I went to check on the chickens and could not find them. I looked all around the chicken house - no chickens. Not one. I widened my search and found this:

Dusting Chickens!

Shortly afterwards something fell in the garage and they took off in one motion, flying up the inside of the garage accompanied by very loud complaining. They flew up on the shelves and hid behind tools. It took me quite awile to find them all. They hunkered down and were really still and quiet and didn't want to come out. I don't know what happened. Maybe the groundhog who lives under the garage and has a hole in there, came out. Anyway, it was impressive!

They were quite dirty.

newbie here with three chicks and a duckling. two Comets, a Delaware and a runner duck. I am petrified of predators and am researching everything. :( I am so sorry for all of your losses. I cannot stand the thought and before they go out I am going to focus on the most secure barriers I can come up with. We live on 32 acres in Western NY and have it all out here. we have 5 dogs, horses, cats and a 5 year old son. I am a SAHM so will be around a lot. We have approximately 1/4 of an acre with a falling down 6 ft. stockade fence around it that we are going to gradually replace. There is a large area within that fence next to the house where we will put the coop ( the rambler from www.chickensaloon.com and then secure a pen area. Part will be the house, two sides the re-enforced fence and a new part will have to be put up to make the rectangle. We want to put the black plastic shrubbery barrier down ( 6") and then pour cement around the fence. I will get the night time predator lights to move around and do whatever else I can do. If anyone is still reading this thread I am open to suggestions. we also will put bird netting along the top of the run. The problem is that there are no trees in the back. I need to get some put in and also find some things for them to hide under for when they spend time free ranging. In the winter I plan on letting them have a stall with a dutch door and making an enclosure for them but that is a ways away.

Hi there,,well, the only time I have to worry about anything getting my chickens is at night, but they are closed up in there coops very securely so nothing can get in. I have 3 dogs and 2 big cats. None of them bother the chickens at all. It depends on your pets. Mine have been around them for about 6 or 7 years. You can also keep them penned up around their coop if you don't want them to free range. I do not feed them organically anymore due to the high prices of the feed. I buy regular chicken feed but I also give them watermelon, yogurt, peas, corn, black sunflower seeds, berries, scraps from the kitchen, etc. My chickens stay in the yard, they don't wander off into the woods or anything. They even stay out of the road. They dont travel like Guinea hens do. Guinea hens will travel up to 1/4 mile away from home. I lost all 10 of mine in one season. If you go on the "farmlife" forum, there are alot of people over there who own chickens and have good ideas.

I feel your pain also. I lost that many and probably more. I have lots of name tags gathered together and I won't count because it is too depressing. I also lost perennials and ferns that were here for several years. Have I mentioned the 11 Japanese maples that are history? Then I have the JM's that are struggling to come back but won't be a pretty tree is my lifetime. Along with the losses, I have the hosta that were turned to mush and have come back but they are about 1/4 their normal size. The hosta that were smart and came up late were hit with a hail storm a week ago and now have holes or are shredded. Daylilies that are blooming on short scapes with very low budcounts and a few of those that also commited plantacide this year. And yes, we are in a drought to help with the recovery. I hope I made you feel better because I am now depressed - lol! At least I am not a farmer and don't make my living fighting with the old girl. She always wins.

Why do you seperate the old and new poop? What do you do with it all?? Hasn't it just been a month since you last cleaned the pens or was that Seramis? and where is he anyway???

So glad you found them, runningtrails! The title of your thread scared me! Nothin' like a good dust bath after a long winter's snow, is there?

I thought you were a little too calm when I read the first part of your story, LOL. You gave yourself away!!! I really enjoyed the dusting hen pics. What joy these birds can bring. Lori

They found the only dry ground on the place. It's only dry because its in the garage/shop. I need to make up another bathe of dusting dirt for their house, I think.

They do bring us a lot of joy. We both like to go out there and spend time with them. It is such a stress relief!

When all was said and done, I only had 16 of the 20 hens back in the house. I had to hunt down the other hiding 4, but I did find them. They sure can be still, quiet and invisible when they want to be.

All that manure is going on the gardens. I have two very large veggie gardens and big flower gardens. It's too hot to put on the garden immediately, is it not? Does it not have to age first? I would love to put is all on at planting time but I don't want to burn the plants.

Great pics, Velvet. Her eyes are even closed! Your's looks like the really dry light dusty stuff. I need to make mine more of that. They are very dirty after that roll in the sandy dirt.

Are those her babies? Too cute! I want peeps this year.

Cute pictures! I am glad you didn't really loose them.
I too have a large veggie garden. I have been trying something new with my chicken poo, partially to keep the dogs out of it. I am expanding my veggie garden and in the new area I dig a hole or trough about 1 foot deep and bury the poo in it. I am hoping that it will break down quicker that way. Has anyone else tried this.
