Very sick baby goat... help?

Our miniture doe had twins yesterday. She didn't seem to be taking care of them, but my father insisted she knew what she was doing, since she had raised a set of twins last year.

One was found dead this morning, and the other was chilly and our outside dog was laying beside it, nuzzling it and trying to make it stand up. (The mother was ignoring everything around her, mostly like she did yesterday. We're getting rid of her soon, she stomped another doe's babies earlier this year.)

Now its in a box, under a lamp in our living room. We've been trying to convince it to take milk from an eyedropper (got an estimated ounce into it already... it did swallow) but its fading fast. We coaxed baking soda water into it and it cried and perked up a bit, but not much.

We're pretty sure its hopeless, but hate to quit a fight before its all said and done.

If anyone knows what more we can do, i'd appreciate it greatly.

He died about five minutes ago.

I'm sorry to hear about your baby goats. It is so hard lose them so young. Last year our first freshener delivered twin girls 2 1/2 weeks early. We did tube feed them colostrum but they were just too young. You might want to keep tube feeding equipment on hand just in case you ever have this happen again. You can look on line to see how to tube feed. It is scary to do but once you do it, its not so bad and it can sometimes save young kids who are too weak to nurse. I'm sorry for your loss.

I am brand spanking new to the whole goat scene and I just got 3 goats about 3 weeks ago. I was told one was due sometime this month. She kidded yesterday morning and I found the little buckling unconcious and nearly dead, I rushed him inside and did what I could to warm him and get him to take some of mama's colostrum that I went back out and milked her for. He's stick and bone...not much to him, his hooves were capped with a thick, boogery yellow junk, no teeth at all, just a pink ridge on the bottom. A day and a half later, he still can't walk, but I am getting him to eat with a syringe...he can't retain any body temperature. As soon as he's off the heating pad he's shivering and very soon starts showing signs of hypothermia!! What are his chances? He's a nubian and he's about as big around as my wrist! When I get him to stand, he looks camel toed because he stands back on his ankles....should I encourage this? Or try splinting? This is my first time ever and I feel like such a failure already.

On the contrary, leaves that once were green, then going through the stages of yellowing, browning, eventually turning black is definitely a cue that you are overwatering. Leaves turn black because they are not able to further take up moisture. The roots are sitting in too much water...forcing the plant to draw water up, until such time, the plant is unable to proceed any further. Root rot sets in....the leaves are the first sign of any problem that is caused from such watering practices. At the stage of blackness, it has gone on far too long. Yellow leaves might be the first sign of overwatering---along with other possible causes...but overwatering, being the one biggest reason for trouble, should be thought of first. As the water is no longer able to do anything for the plant....even tho, water is sitting only a few inches away...the leaves are unable to draw any more, they are saturated...and so will turn black. I think one of the easiest ways to have such result is by not having something between the soil and the drainage holes and letting the drainage water sit too long under the plant causing it to draw water it once got rid of, to be drawn back up and if the plant cant use it, it sits there, drowning the roots. Distilled water is a viable choice if you believe the water from your tap has something in it that might cause problems. But there are other sources of water without going the distilled route. Bottled water---very common these days...water that has sat for days in a watering can or water from snow you have brought in and allowed to gain room temperature can be used. Plants react to changes that are abrupt. Cold drafts from floor vents or open doorways can cause yellowing leaves. Too high nighttime temperatures can cause browning tips and edges.

It is possible it has the herpes virus which would not be uncommon for a emaciated stray kitten. I've had many come my way. My Bonnie came to me with both eyes glued shut from infection, every bone in her little body protruding and barely able to walk. I nursed her back to health and she too unfortunately lost partial site in one eye. If you can, you should get that baby to a vet to determine what exactly is wrong with the eye. I rescued a grown cat after Katrina who was blind in one eye due to an injury as determined by the vet. I consulted with a feline opthamologist asking if removal of the eye was the best course of treatment and she informed me that when a cat keeps a eye that it has lost sight in due to injury, a lot of times, they can develop cancer in that eye. So I took her advice and had the eye removed. My Cocoa hasn't missed a step and is living the good life now. I'm glad the baby is feeling better.

I just got 3 baby goats from an auction and one doesn't eat that well and has watery eyes and isnt that energetic like her brother, she likes to sleep alot. I have milking goats so I use that to feed. What can I do to help her???

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of the little one.

For future reference, chilled kids should be warmed up to an internal body temperature of at least 100 degrees (normal is 101-103 degrees). You can do this by putting them in a bag & submersing them in warm water while holding their head out of the water, or warming up towels in the dryer & placing the goat on the towels, or using a hair dryer being careful not to burn them (careful of dehydration).

After the internal temperature is over 100 degrees, a quick energy boost will help them-molasses or corn syrup on thier tongue works wonders. Gives them quick energy for rapid recovery from being chilled. Afterwards colostrum (bottled or tubed as stated). The most important thing is to not feed a chilled kid as milk/colustrum only sits in the gut-they cannot digest milks with such a low temperature because their body went into "survival" mode.

To re-cap: Warm them to at least 100 degrees, give quick energy like simple sugars, then Colustrum/milk.

I've been having the same problem with my goats the past months, vet couldnt help me with a concrete diagnosis...i lost one buck and two kids in a span of 4 months. First they get weak joints, and they cant stand in a few hours theyre lying down and die within 24 hrs. What could be wrong with them? Im at a loss, and i feel so helpless that i cant be of much help to them.

My two month old kid is dying, ive been awake the whole night alternately massaging his legs and used a hair blower to warm his joints but its not working.
