Young Rooster - Not Crowing Yet?

I have 2 young chicks that were hatched on November 9th 2008-I am positive (85-90%) that one is a hen and the other is a young roo. The one that I am pretty sure is a roo is already in the massive stage, his tail feathers are very long and has a small waddle and has a visible comb. Shouldn't he be crowing by now? All my other roo's at that age were starting to crow. Should I be concerned or is he just a late bloomer---Ahhhhhhh I mean crower LOL

It is my understanding that some do not start until they are nearly full grown.

He's only just over three months old...mine usually start to crow at around 3-4 months, although yeah, some do start earlier or later. Don't worry, one day you'll hear this horrid, strangled noise coming from the barnyard.

Then you'll wish he never learned to crow! :)

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens! Do you know for SURE they are roosters? It is often impossible to tell when they are young. If male, they should start soon, gradually working up by making squacking noises at first, then getting louder. Some may start sooner then others. I have 6 roosters at the moment, they are all a year old, and I still have yet to hear two of them crow, if they ever will. Also, be sure that when the birds and the bees issue starts in a few months between the hens and roosters, that the roos arent too hard on the hens (they can get feathers ripped out and bleed if there are not enough hens per rooster). Perhaps some of your others are girls which may solve that! And dont worry, youll hear crowing soon enough....and it will NEVER stop!

newbie here with three chicks and a duckling. two Comets, a Delaware and a runner duck. I am petrified of predators and am researching everything. :( I am so sorry for all of your losses. I cannot stand the thought and before they go out I am going to focus on the most secure barriers I can come up with. We live on 32 acres in Western NY and have it all out here. we have 5 dogs, horses, cats and a 5 year old son. I am a SAHM so will be around a lot. We have approximately 1/4 of an acre with a falling down 6 ft. stockade fence around it that we are going to gradually replace. There is a large area within that fence next to the house where we will put the coop ( the rambler from www.chickensaloon.com and then secure a pen area. Part will be the house, two sides the re-enforced fence and a new part will have to be put up to make the rectangle. We want to put the black plastic shrubbery barrier down ( 6") and then pour cement around the fence. I will get the night time predator lights to move around and do whatever else I can do. If anyone is still reading this thread I am open to suggestions. we also will put bird netting along the top of the run. The problem is that there are no trees in the back. I need to get some put in and also find some things for them to hide under for when they spend time free ranging. In the winter I plan on letting them have a stall with a dutch door and making an enclosure for them but that is a ways away.

Almost all roosters will eventually crow. As you're seeing, some breeds with certain comb types may be confusing to sex before they are fully mature. It isn't helping that the pullet which is laying probably has as full a comb as any young males in the group. You can make it complicated if you really have to know ASAP by seperating each bird individually until it lays, and band it as a pullet, but you'll still have to wait because those that don't lay may just still be immature. 4 months is still young for some nonproduction bred breeds to be laying. Either way, you have what you have, and nothing will change it. Only time will fully answer your questions unles you find an experienced chicken keeper to look at them for you.

Hi Organic Flutterby, Once a roster mates with a hen they do lay fertile eggs for as long as 10 to 14 days. I cage breed seramas (for color)and may time I pair a roster with as many as 30 hens. Each hen has her one cage and the roster is moved three times a day from cage to cage. It is funny, after the first 2 or 3 days of moving the roster around-he will jump out onto my hand so he can go to the next. They are so smart-more than we think. Some hens love to 'get down and broody' and will set on rocks if you let them let along infertile eggs. If you get a hen that wants to set and have no rosters-get some fertile eggs (try some golden pheasants eggs) from a friends flock or google 'Fertile eggs for Sale' you'll get all kinds of results. Then switch the eggs-let the new eggs sit out for 4-6 hour first so they won't be too cold and run the hen off the nest. I use this method years ago to add new kinds of birds to my flock (good for bringing new blood lines in also). Good luck. Keep on Chick'en. Thanks you two--I was just concerned something might be wrong (sick) and you know what they say, if there showing any signs of sickness then they are already really sick. Velvet the very first time I ever heard my Roo's crow I went running outside expecting to find him in the jaws of some unsuspecting preditor-after going out there and then seeing and hearing him crow I about ROFL-he was such a sight but you could tell one: he was surprised that the noise was coming out of him and two: he was scaring himself to death and three: You could tell he was acting real proud of himself!

msjay: Comic relief! Roos are great for entertainment value. :)

Plus, watching a roo escort his ladies around the yard, tenderly finding them bits of food and inspecting nests while he burbles with excitement, is right cool. :) I can't resist scooping up my boys once in a while and petting and praising them...which of course embarrasses them no end.

When i bought my chickens they said that one was a roo and the others were hens. It even had the tail feather, now she is laying eggs. LOL

comic relief is right I love watching my roos-especially when they find some tastly morsel and his girls come running! like you can't resist picking them up every once in a while just to pester and pet them! Secretly I think Silver likes it, he makes this funny little sound in the back of his throat just like he is purring-when I put him down he acts very indignant and shakes his feathers as he is walking away-the cute thing he does is when he is doing this he will turn his head and look at me with his head cocked to the side and then spread his wings out and flutters them at me! he is so cute!

well I THINK I have a roo but not sure. If I do I will get to see for myself why all you guys are in love with a rooster. My Grandma told me roosters are mean SOB's and told me not to bother getting one. I see them on craigs list all the time for free and they say because they are too aggressive.

My baby rooster Soldier (who lives with 3 baby hens in a cage beside my bed for now) JUST crowed for the FIRST time today and I doubt he is over 4 weeks!! (I got him a few days ago without knowing his age) is it normal for him to crow this early?? I heard him screaming so I ran to him to find the hens staring at him like WTF and he was streched up high and all fluffed up and crowing at my nearly full grown broiler chicken Honey (she is about 18 weeks old, but she is completely healthy with no heart or weight problems :D ) and Honey was staring at him like : 'SILENCE!! I KILL YOU!!' lol. So anyways... Is it normal for Soldier to crow this early or should I be worried?!?! For now, Soldier is to small to live outside (he is perfectly capable of living outside, but I baby my chickens and don't move them outside until they lay their first egg or crow their first real crow). For now,I have my very own personal alarm clock next to my bed. Oh joy. This is gonna be REAL fun...
