Good evergreen for in front of a window?

Howdy!

I have a suburban ranch style house with a bedroom window facing the street and sidewalk. There is quite a bit of traffic so I'd like to put a shrub in front of the window, but in a manner that doesn't look like I stuck a bush in front of a window. I'm old fashioned and don't think you should be obvious about putting plants in front of windows, but I would still like a bit of privacy.

The most attractive option I've seen used in the neighborhood is Japanese maples, but of course they aren't evergreen. They don't look overgrown; they just look tasteful. I don't require total privacy from this plant--just a bit of a screen so I don't have to keep the blinds shut all the time. So I want an evergreen Japanese maple substitute. Light, lacy, not too big.

I'm thinking perhaps Fargesia bamboo but it might look odd (and last time I grew it I was in zone 6 so I'm not sure what species I'd need).

Any suggestions? The less water required the better, of course! Thanks-F
