2 horseradish questions...

I've been growing horseradish for the past three years. Each year the leaves have come up great, and this spring I harvested my first roots. They were delicious.

My questions are #1 - after harvesting I replanted side shoots that I cut off the main root. It's been about four weeks and no new plants have emerged. Is that normal? Did I do something wrong?

#2 - this year for the first time my horseradish is flowering. Is that a problem? and if it is should I do anyting about it?

Um, I'm not sure about the replanted side shoots -- I would think something would have come up by now. However, in my experience, horseradish is an awfully hard plant to kill, so I would be surprised if it doesn't make it in the end -- seems like every little piece of root can grow, so it shouldn't be a problem.

If, for some reason, it doesn't grow for you, I'd just pick up a piece or two from the grocery store and plant it -- I've seen sprouty horseradish many a time in the grocery store.

Flowering is no problem at all. Horseradish is almost always sterile, so it hardly ever makes seeds. You can remove the flowers like you would with rhubarb if you wish, but I don't think it's going to make that much difference in the end, one way or the other.

When you say side shoots are you talking roots(rhizome) or just the green shoots from the roots?

I put a plant in last spring. Purchased it from my favorite heirloom site, tastefulgarden.com. It gets very large leaves, kind of strange as the leaves almost look like they are from two separte varieties of plants, but they are not. Cut a big chunk off this spring to use, just take a shovel and cut through the root for the amount you want to use - leave the rest in the ground to continue to grow. I hear that it spreads quite a bit, but I figure that we will use enough of it so not to worry. Pretty easy to grow and very forgiving. I am from the Midwest, so can't really answer some of the climate questions. Here, no problem with the heat, gets mostly sun all day, overwinters great, gets the same amount of water as the rest of my vegie garden.

I am not too familiar with harvesting, but my Mom had some at the lake and once it gets bigger I think you can just dig up some root from the outer edge. The key is to let it get bigger and wider I think, since the root is sort of a rhizome that spreads outward. It sort of sounds like the type of perennial that grows anywhere and you'll have for life. My Mom's grew by a telephone pole in a low spot surrounded by grass, very clay soil and soggy during wet spells. Interested too if Sharon has the variegated kind? Shauna (luv2gro) had a posting last year stating she was considering planting the variegated horseradish by the driveway strictly for the variegated leaves. Just wondering if the variegated one is actually as nice as the pictures show. My Mom and Grandmother ground up horseradish and mixed it with mashed beets, canned it in jars. It's used on ham (at Easter) or roast beef at other times. The beets cut down the "hotness" though of course that varies depending on the ratio of horseradish to beets. My horseradish doesn't have prickers on the stem. It is a rather smooth plant. I'd guess you have a weed. Please post a picture. You can also compare to pix at google. FataMorgana Here is a link that might be useful: google images - horseradish

The seed do not mature.... cold treatment, or warm-cold periods do not help. the reason I dont know. I also have not worried about this since propagation is so easy from root cuttings. If some one is curious enough to start a research project to discover why I would be interested in reading about it But again i will produce this wonderful herb the way my grandfather taught me....

Thanks for the help.

Mark - when I dug the root up there was the big main root with smaller roots coming off the sides. I cut the small roots off and replanted them cut side up.

Give the roots alittle time to mature. Being that they were the smaller ones they will usually heal the cut area before sending up new shoots.
