:) You should feel complimented- obviously these are birds with refined taste! Birds need to eat a little greenery just as we do- at least that's what I read in captive bird-keeping articles. So maybe they are satisfying their need with your peas? Your local birds might have discovered your pea vines by accident, but decided that they liked them! Birds' diets can change dramatically when they are feeding young. The nesting season should be winding down by the end of summer, so maybe your fall crop will be OK? All of this is assuming that you've ruled out them feeding on aphids on the peas, of course! :) As Zeedman said, they will likely remember where they got this food next year and come back to check. Maybe some pie plates hanging so they flash and bang in the breeze? Or maybe some 30% shade cloth (recommended in the fruit forum as being superior to bird netting in every way)draped over the vines once the birds show up again? Before our current bird-pecking problem (thanks for some solutions, BTW), we had whole tomatoes that would just disappear. One day they'd be just about ready to pick and the next day when we planned on picking them - poof! - they'd be gone. Completely gone! One day, by accident, we discovered the culprit: our Lab mix pooch. She was quite sneaky about it too. As we peeked out a window from the house, we discovered that she often had at least 1 tomato as dessert after dinner. She'd go out into the garden and sniff each tomato, passing over the green ones and the semi-ripe ones until she found one at the peak of ripeness. Then, she'd carefully, get the whole thing into her mouth and gently tug on it until she dislodged it from the vine. Afterward, we could see that she was quite proud of herself! She's now passed over Rainbow Bridge and our current dogs show no affinity for the tomatoes. We kinda miss her antics...

I guess the story is not over...as I said, little TUTI left at 1:55pm. At about 4:10pm, I heard a rustle in the birdless box (I left the nest there for now). The HOWR FRANTICALLY started to de-construct the nest. Grabbing nest material--fur, straw, grass, leaves--out of the hole! It was in a frenzy!!! It would grab something and almost throw itself at the hole to get the material out! If it went to grab a chunk of fur too big to take out, it pulled and pulled at it till it broke it down to a size that would go out the hole. Fast and furious. I did catch this frenzy on tape so I'll be putting that online in the next few days. I closed off the box for today. I need some rest. I can't imagine how such a little bird can do what I saw it do: peck eggs and throw them out, peck chicks and throw them out, attack almost-fledged chicks, and de-construct a HUGE TUTI nest! Just a little update on the baby Robins. So far they seem to be doing great, a lot of chirping going on, theyve been in the same tree for a few days now ( its rite next to the one they got moved to ) seems like they should be learning to fly by now to me ? i guess theyll stay up there till the parents decide to let em test there wings. At least theyre safe and they have plenty to eat, plus i keep leaving pecans out for the parents, not sure if the parents are feeding them pecans yet. I know for sure my cat will be happy when they finally fly away so he can have his back yard back.
