Help with victorian foundation planting

Was going to post in the state forum, but I thought this might be a better place for this question. We just removed a bunch of yews from the front of our victorian house (stumps too). Trying to get year round interest, but hubby doesn't like boxwood or holly. We bought 3 heavenly bamboo because they were the only evergreen we could agree on. They're about 2 feet tall, and they look kind of lost at the front of the house. We also bought a weeping pussy willow to go at the far left side. We were thinking about something tall and skinny for either side of the steps. (The white brick is being painted green to match carpet or red to match brick). Any suggestions for using these plants and where to place them, what to plant with them, or what to use in their place? It's zone 5, full sun, and we'd like low maintenance. New to the forum, any help would be appreciated.
